Internships at the Bank of Italy

Under the internship agreement between the Bank of Italy and the University of Milan, you can do an extracurricular internship at the Technical Secretariat of the Banking and Financial Ombudsman Service (ABF) if you are a recent graduate in the single-cycle Master's degree programme in Law, and at the Division of local economic analysis and research (ARET) if you are a recent graduate in a Master's degree programme in the economic and statistical area.

Technical secretariat of the Banking and Financial Ombudsman (ABF)

The Bank of Italy offers 11 extracurricular internships at the Technical Secretariat of the Banking and Financial Ombudsman (ABF) in Milan. Internships are open to recent graduates of the single-cycle Master’s degree in Law, and are expected to start around 7 October 2024.

Expected start date: 7 October 2024

The 11 extracurricular internships are divided as follows:

  • A - 4 six-month internships
  • B - 7 twelve-month internships

You can apply for just one type of internship (A or B as specified in the call for applications).

Application requirements

Applicants must:

  1. have obtained a single-cycle Master’s degree in Law at the University of Milan after 8 October 2023, with a final mark of no less than 100/110;
  2. be less than 28 years old on the application deadline date.

How to apply

Applicants must submit their application to the Internship Office by 22 July 2024 with the following attachments:

  1. application and statement signed in accordance with articles 46 and 47 of Presidential Decree no. 445/2000 (see attachment to the call for applications);
  2. CV;
  3. abstract of the degree thesis (no more than 350 words);
  4. copy of a valid ID;
  5. list of all the exams passed (downloadable from UNIMIA).

All the above documents must be submitted in .pdf format to [email protected]. Please note that only applications RECEIVED by the deadline will be considered. Applications received after the deadline will be disregarded, no matter when they were sent.
The Internship Services may contact applicants for checks and clarifications on the applications received, using the email address and telephone number specified by applicants in their application.

Selection process

Only applicants who graduated at the University of Milan will be considered. Once applications are closed, the Internship Services will vet applications based on the criteria set out in the call, and shortlist 16 applicants (2 for type-A internships and 14 for type-B internships). Their names will then be forwarded to the Bank of Italy.
The results of this pre-selection will be posted on this webpage on Friday, 2 August 2024.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to take an interview with a commission designated by the Bank. Interviews will focus on the skills needed to carry out the internship, as well as on the applicant’s motivations.

Subsequently, the Bank will notify applicants of the results of their interview.
 

Internship activation
Once the selection process is over, the Bank of Italy will start the extracurricular internship set-up procedure.

Division of local economic analysis and research (ARET) - Bank of Italy 2023 I

The Bank of Italy offers 2 three-month internships to recent Master’s degree graduates in economics and statistics. The period can be extended by another three months. The internships are expected to start in November 2023 and will take place in the Division of local economic analysis and research (ARET) of the Milan branch of the Bank of Italy.

Expected start date: November 2023

Requirements

Candidates must:

  1. Have a Master’s degree/specialised degree in one of the following degree classes: Management (84/S or LM-77); Economics (64/S or LM-56); Finance (19/S or LM-16); Economic, financial and actuarial statistics (91/S); Statistics (LM-82); Actuarial and financial statistics (LM-83); Demographic and social statistics (90/S); Analysis of complex systems (48/S); Political science (70/S or LM-62), or an equivalent degree pursuant to Interministerial Decree of 9 July 2009;
  2. Have obtained such degree at the University of Milan after 1 December 2022 with a final mark of at least 105/110 (or equivalent mark);
  3. Be less than 28 years old on the application deadline date;
  4. Have passed an exam in statistics and an exam in econometrics. Candidates who, during their university career, have passed exams with different names but with a focus on statistics and econometrics may access the selection process as well. Applications will be assessed by COSP Internship services.

Financial support

Interns will receive a gross monthly allowance of 1,000 (one thousand) euros, subject to compliance with attendance and confidentiality obligations.

This stipend cannot be cumulated with any other compensation, even in the form of student/doctoral scholarships or research fellowships. Therefore, any such compensation must be forfeited for the period covered by the internship stipend paid by the Bank.

  4. Copy of a valid ID;
  5. List of all the exams passed (downloadable from UNIMIA);

Selection process

Only candidates who graduated at the University of Milan will be considered.

Once applications are closed, the Internship services will assess the applications and identify the name of 1 eligible candidate to be submitted to the Bank of Italy, based on the highest degree mark. In the case of a tie in marks, the most recent graduation date will be considered. In the event of a further tie, the younger age will be considered. The name of the chosen candidate will be published on this page by Tuesday, 3 October 2023.

Then, the candidate will be invited to take an interview with a commission designated by the Bank.
