PNRR: the projects of the University of Milan

The University of Milan participates in Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) by implementing projects under Mission 1 “Digitalisation, innovation, competitiveness, culture and tourism (funded by the Ministry of Culture), Mission 4 “Education and research" (funded by the Ministry of University and Research) and Mission 6 “Health” (funded by the Ministry of Health). The University is also involved in projects included in the National Plan for Complementary Investments to the PNRR (Complementary National Plan, or PNC), which are funded by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT).

Multidisciplinarity, basic and applied research and innovation are at the core of the PNRR projects of the University of Milan. Project topics range from the valorisation of cultural, historical, religious and rural heritage to guidance and support to students transitioning from upper secondary school to university, from research and innovation processes to university buildings, from frontier medical research and the digitalisation of healthcare services to the creation of a sustainable ecosystem, from cybersecurity to big data, up to the implementation of PhD programmes responding to the innovation needs of enterprises.

Within the context of projects falling under Mission 4, Component 2, the University of Milan is also using part of its PNRR funds to launch cascade funding calls. A financing mechanism already in use at EU level, cascade calls provide direct funding to research projects proposed by third parties (public or private), with a view to promoting new research opportunities. The University of Milan has announced cascade funding calls in the fields of humanities, food, ICT security, RNA, agriculture and health for a total of 20 million euros.
