Objectives
The Energy working group has the objective to favour the development of the University energy management plan. It performs research on the energy demand of University facilities and proposes solutions and actions to improve energy efficiency and reduce the use of fossil fuels in favour of renewable energy sources.

University Initiatives
The activity of the working group begins with an analysis of various experiences and best practices.
To reduce consumption of fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy sources, the University utilizes the following systems:
- a trigeneration plant, installed and active since 2010 on the Città Studi campus. The system uses waste heat – which is not recovered as work during the combustion process but lost to the surrounding environment – for the combined production of electricity, heating, and cooling from natural gas
- photovoltaic systems for self-generated electricity. Four photovoltaic systems have been installed, the most recent ones at the new Veterinary Medicine campus in Lodi and at the Informatics Department facility at Via Celoria 18 in Milan
- green electricity purchased since July 2017 from the national “certified green” network, which provides electricity with a “Guarantee of Origin” certificate, ensuring that it is produced exclusively from renewable sources.
For the assessment of the environmental impact of its buildings, in 2018 the University initiated and obtained BREEAM environment certification (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) for the Ca’ Granda monumental complex on Via Festa del Perdono, the second oldest university facility still in use in Italy after the University of Padua. The University has also initiated the procedure to obtain LEED O+M certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Operations and Maintenance) for the new Veterinary Medicine facility in Lodi and for the Giovanni Degli Antoni Informatics Department facility in Città Studi in Milan. Procedures are also underway for LEED BD+C certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Building Design and Construction) of the Via Mercalli 23 facility in Milan, which is currently undergoing an upgrade.
