The University of Milan’s Green Office is a working group that plans and coordinates the University’s environmental and social sustainability policy actions.
The Green Office was established by order of Rector Elio Franzini to the delegate for the development of the Minerva 2030 project, Stefano Bocchi, in collaboration with the Deputy Rector for Education and Student Services, Marina Brambilla, and falls under the Construction and Sustainability Division.
It acts through the thematic working groups Energy, Mobility, Waste Management, University and Urban Green Areas, Foods, and Society and Territory, which are composed of research and teaching staff (four members), administrative personnel (four members), and students (eight members selected via call for applications).
The Green Office coordinator may also invite other persons having competencies required by specific initiatives to join the group.
The Green Office has the following purposes:
- knowledge of the state of the art in sustainability strategies and actions to build a shared, open, and accessible knowledge base;
- promotion of the culture of sustainability to spread awareness and responsibility in adopting virtuous behaviours;
- coordination of the efforts of the various members of the university community to strengthen synergies and expand the national network of collaborations;
- planning of initiatives and projects to develop innovative solutions and implement measures to achieve a concrete reduction in adverse environmental impacts.
The thematic work groups of the University of Milan’s Green Office work on three parallel levels.
- Research and monitoring, to build a shared, open, and accessible knowledge base, starting from the initiatives and the results achieved by the University and combined with the analysis of critical issues and best practices, taking into consideration the experiences of other sustainable campuses in Italy and abroad.
- Information and networking, to promote the culture of sustainability and coordinate University efforts in communication and in scientific and technological knowledge sharing and transfer, identifying and intensifying internal and external relations both in the local area and on the national and international scale.
- Concept and planning, to develop innovative solutions and execute measures for the real reduction in environmental impact, formulating short-, medium-, and long-term plans, financial backing, and technical and organizational design of a complexity appropriate to the dimensions of the activity.
