Italian language for foreigners entry test for prospective students

International students holding a foreign qualification who wish to enrol in the Master’s degree courses in Business Administration, Law and Corporate Governance, in European and extra-European languages and literatures, in Music, Cultures, Media, Performance and in Cognitive Sciences and Decisional Processes must prove the B1 level of Italian language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) as an entry requirement.

The B1 level is assessed by SLAM - University of Milan Language Centre throughout the admission procedure in the following ways exclusively:

  • language certificate earned for no more than 3 years at the time of submission, at the B1 level or higher, among those accepted by the University.  Language certificates must be uploaded when submitting the admission application. If the language certificate has expired or is not valid, applicants will have to sit the Italian language entry test run by SLAM for each single Master’s degree course according to the test calendar;
  • Italian language level assessed by SLAM during a Bachelor’s degree course at the University of Milan. B1 or higher levels achieved for no more than 4 years (reference is made to the date on which such level was registered on the applicant's career page) are deemed valid.  Verification is automatic, with no need to attach any statements during the admission application.  If the previous Italian language level has expired or is not valid, applicants will have to sit the Italian language entry test run by SLAM for each single Master’s degree course according to the test calendar;
  • Italian language entry test run by SLAM for each single Master’s degree course according to the test calendar.

N.B.: Applicants will be summoned automatically to sit the entry test on ONE session only according to the dates scheduled by the course itself.

Tests are held remotely.

Each applicant will have the right to sit the test only once, regardless of the number of Master’s degree courses they have applied for.

Should applicants be absent on the date of the test they had been summoned to, they will have to submit a medical certificate or similar documentation to excuse their absence and send it via the InformaStudenti platform, ‘language test’ category.

If in default of such documentation, applicants will not be entitled to register for any further tests and, as a consequence, they will have to submit a language certificate among those accepted by the University of Milan by and no later than the deadline set in the relevant table; certificates will have to be submitted via the InformaStudenti platform, ‘language test’ category, writing the following as the message subject line: Master’s degree course application - Italian language certificate

Applicants who do not sit the entry test will not have met the admission requirement and, as a consequence, they will have to submit a language certificate among those accepted by the University of Milan by and no later than the deadline set in the relevant table; certificates will have to be submitted via the InformaStudenti platform, ‘language test’ category, writing the following as the message subject line: Master’s degree course application - Italian language certificate

Test result is uploaded within about a week on the dedicated admission application platform and applicants will be sent relevant notification via mail to the email address they entered when applying.

Should applicants pass the test and, therefore, reach the required level as per admission requirements, their application will be validated as far as the Italian language requirement assessed by SLAM is concerned.

Should applicants not pass the test and, therefore, not reach the level required as per admission requirements, they will be sent relevant notification stating that they did not pass the test. Applicants who do not reach the level required by their Master’s degree course will have to submit a language certificate among those accepted by the University of Milan by and no later than the deadline set in the relevant table; certificates will have to be submitted via the InformaStudenti platform, ‘language test’ category, writing the following as the message subject line: Master’s degree course application - Italian language certificate

N.B.: The Master’s degree course in Music, Cultures, Media, Performance does not only require a B1 entry level, but also a B2 Italian language assessment to be earned within the degree.

Applicants who sat the entry test and reached B2 or higher will have already earned this compulsory assessment and, once officially admitted to the degree course, the corresponding 3 credits will be uploaded directly on their career page in January.

Applicants who reached B1 at the entry test may then choose to sit a second entry-level test to try and reach B2. Should they reach B2, the corresponding 3 credits will be uploaded directly on their career page and they will not have to attend any Italian language course. Should they reach B1 again, they will be registered to attend a B2 Italian language course; should they reach a level below B1, the B1 level assessed during the entry test shall remain valid and students will have to attend a B2 Italian language course. Should they decide not to sit the entry-level test, they will be registered automatically to attend a B2 Italian language course.
