Italian language for foreigners tests and courses

SLAM - University of Milan Language Centre organises courses to learn Italian and improve Italian language proficiency according to the levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).

The Italian language courses for foreigners are open to all international students of the University of Milan, to incoming international students participating in the Erasmus+ programme or in other EU and non-EU mobility programmes, as well as to all international users of the University or visiting our University, among which PhD students, post-graduate students, research fellows, professors and researchers, language trainers and collaborators.

Some courses are reserved to Unimi international students enrolled in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses whose Study Programme includes a compulsory or elective assessment of Italian language and the relevant 3-credit activity named ‘Additional Language Skills: Italian’. The required CEFR levels are laid down by each single degree course and specified in the relevant box, as well as reported in the relevant Study Programme.

N.B.: some Master's degree courses require a specific Italian language level as an entry requirement for prospective international students.  The required CEFR level is laid down by each single degree course as provided for by the entry requirements of each Study Programme and it is verified by a specific entry test.

All those who wish to attend a course to improve their Italian language proficiency or who must/choose to get 3 credits for the Italian language assessment as laid down by their degree course are required to test their starting level of language proficiency by submitting a language certificate among those accepted by the University or by sitting an entry-level test, which is compulsory in lack of a valid certificate.

Having verified their starting level, participants will then be assigned to an Italian language course for foreigners aimed at reaching the next CEFR level and international students requiring a compulsory or elective Italian language assessment will be granted the corresponding 3 credits if proving already the level required by their degree course.
