Students must acquire core competencies in the physiopathology of organs and apparatus, theoretical and practical knowledge required to identify diseases affecting the body's organ systems, theoretical and practical knowledge of the main sectors of instrumental and laboratory diagnostics pertaining to said diseases, the ability to assess links with, and the impact of, internal and specialist medicine. They must therefore be able to recognize the symptoms and clinical-functional signs of disease in organs and systems, having acquired core competencies in diagnostics, therapy, psychology and ethics for a comprehensive patient workup. To this end they must: develop the ability to clinically assess patients based on the anamnesis and objective examination; develop critical and analytical diagnostic skills; gain familiarity with the main diagnostic procedures and laboratory-instrumental analyses; recognize and be able to address the main medical emergencies; acquaint themselves with therapeutic resources to programme their best use and understand their indications and contraindications, as well as possible interactions and iatrogenic effects; acquire core competencies relating to clinical research methodologies and drug testing; understand the basic issues in prevention, public healthcare and social medicine. The student must acquire sufficient theoretical knowledge and professional skills in recognizing and treating the most common pathologies in emergency-critical situations
Lastly, the student must also have knowledge of the clinical presentation and treatment of the most common pathologies pertaining to the other class types
Core training objectives
Acquisition of in-depth doctrinal knowledge with related practical-clinical application skills in: Physics, Biochemistry, Histology, General Biology, Medical Genetics, Systems Anatomy and Topographic Anatomy especially, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathophysiology, Biomaterials (Biocompatibility), and Bioengineering. In addition, students must acquire the knowledge necessary for epidemiological evaluation and classification of clinical cases, also through the use of IT systems; as well as the organisation and management of health services according to the most recent guidelines, including those of the EU
Acquisition of practical experience in patient semeiology and clinical assessment methodology, defining the type of pathology on the basis of knowledge in Medical surgical pathophysiology, Clinical pathology, Laboratory medicine, Instrumental semeiotics, and Anatomical pathology. Knowledge of the Medical-legal aspects pertaining to the specialist profession and the laws and regulations governing clinical practice
School-specific training objectives
Basic knowledge of Topographical Anatomy, important for objective clinical examination and the surgical strategy; principles of asepsis; problems concerning the organisation and environmental hygiene of operating rooms; knowledge of surgical and endoscopic instruments, suture materials, as well as traditional and alternative surgical techniques and methods; basic knowledge and related practical experience necessary to correctly personally define (on the basis of an overall evaluation of both the patient and the pathology) the pathology and indicate the most appropriate type of treatment - medical or surgical - based on risks, benefits and outcomes for each individual patient; ability to manage post-operative problems; ability to personally perform surgical procedures, having acquired the necessary anatomical and surgical knowledge, both in elective and emergency situations, on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of the condition and the patient
