Learning objectives
Understanding of the role of pests in storage areas in particular cereals, pulses, spices, herbs and nuts. Procedures for the application of proper integrated pest management.
Expected learning outcomes
Acquiring knowledge about the problems of storage from the attack of pests. Biology of the main pest species on post-harvest. Procedures for correct prevention of stored product. How to implement a monitoring of pests. Methods of pest control through the use of physical methods.

Characteristics and damage caused by pests. Main species infesting commodities and processing environments and storage: Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Psocottera, Zygentoma (Thysanura) and Cockroaches. Main species of mites of the foodstuffs. Factors favoring settlement, survival and spread of pests. General rules of prevention. Standards of cleanliness. Insect penetrators and invaders. Methods of sampling and pest monitoring. Use of traps. How to use the monitoring data. Determination of the infestation origin. Use of biocides in the environment: insecticides of natural origin and synthetic analogues, organic synthesis, fumigants and gas mixture. Norms for correct use of biocides in silos and warehouses. Physical method. Use of pheromone. Biological control.
Rodents: species, damage, prevention and monitoring. Identification of the species, application of the means of control and monitoring of results. Mention of birds and potential damage in food industries.
Main national and European lows concerning hygiene and infestations in food industries.
Prerequisites for admission
Notions of general entomology.
Teaching methods
The teachers will use lectures, laboratory activities and didactic visits.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an oral.There are no ongoing checks. During the year, various exam sessions are proposed during the periods set by the didactic regulation.
The interview on the topics in the program will be based on 3-4 questions, aimed at ascertaining the achievement of the teaching objectives.
