Course syllabus
This course aims at providing the student with the knowledge required to tackle all the fundamental problems of organic chemistry, with particular emphasis focussed on the study and the understanding of the chemical properties and reactivity of aliphatic compounds.
In the theory part of the course the concepts of chemical bonding and atom ibridization will be briefly summarized, followed by an introduction to stereochemistry and conformational analysis (10 hours).
Then, the standard classification of organic compounds on the basis of their reactivity deriving from the presence of functional groups will be presented in the following sequence: alkanes, haloalkanes, alcohols, thiols, amines, alkenes, alkynes, polyenes, allylic and other delocalized systems (10 hours). Diels Alder (4 hous)
Carbonyl compounds and their reactivity (10 hours).
Carboxylic acids and their derivatives (12 hours). Amines (2 h)
Retrosynthetic analysis (2 hours).

With the in-class exercises (16 hours) the student will be trained in solving simple problems of organic chemistry and of retro-synthetic analysis of relatively complex structures.
Prerequisites for admission
General chemistry
Teaching methods
Lessons and problems session in classroom.
Teaching Resources
- Brown, Foote, Iverson, Anslyn: Chimica Organica VI Ed., EdiSES srl, Napoli
Assessment methods and Criteria
Written and oral examination: the written text will include problems (10 exercises) related to all the topics discussed in the course; after passing the written exam, the student will take an oral examination that involves the discussion on the synthesis of an organic molecule on the blackboard and, possibly, some questions on the theory (reaction mechanisms, characteristics and properties of organic molecules and reagents).
