Course syllabus
The course is divided into a general part relating to the theoretical horizon of new digital media in relation to the arts in the transition from the avant-garde to technological contemporaneity (using and explaining the books by Balzola Monteverdi, Monteverdi, Sansone and Floridi in the program) and a specific part that identifies projects, proposals and theatrical practices that have used video and interactive systems on stage from the 1980s to today. A specific part is dedicated both to the theory of the virtual following the volume by Andrea Pinotti Alla soglia dell'immagine (Einaudi 2021) and to video-theatre archives. The path is structured following the volume by A. Monteverdi, Leggere uno spettacolo multimediale (Dino Audino editore) which chronologically goes through the different phases of documented and witnessed intermedial theatre. From videomapping to online theatre, to digital artivism, the course will take a look as exhaustive as possible at the concept of digital liveness in a transversal methodological perspective, which touches on sociological and mediological fields of study. A section will be dedicated to the digital archives of GIACOMO VERDE. Meetings with the protagonists of the technological scene are planned.
Prerequisites for admission
A basic knowledge of some theoretical concepts related to new media languages is required, which can be easily acquired through the reading of L. Manovich, Il linguaggio dei nuovi media , or in alternative A. Monteverdi, A. Balzola Le arti multimediali digitali.(Garzanti Milano, nuova edizione 2019)
Teaching methods
The course is divided into two parts: the history and theory of media in relation to the arts, and performative techno-artistic practices. In this sense, the volumes identified for the bibliography - which select specific case studies - are fundamental in order not to get lost in the enormous quantity of artistic proposals offered by the web. During the lessons we will study in depth authors and artistic movements, as well as the technologies applied to the sector of scenography (videotheatre, videomapping).
In addition to the handouts, sites and platforms where video documentation can be found will be indicated.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The test will be oral and will focus on: verification of learning of the course topics, 2. Verification of the conceptual points relating to media theories indicated both in class and in the volumes in the bibliography 3. Verification of the study of the volumes. The books on the syllabus, although substantial in terms of the number of pages, delve into authors and projects proposed as case studies in the lessons; for this reason, attendance greatly facilitates the study of the examination programme.
