Learning objectives
To understand the themes and tools of analysis and planning of rural territories, including regulatory and procedural aspects and their environmental and landscape implications.
To understand the themes and tools of green area and landscape design.
To develop experties in using methodologies and technical tools to address practical applications of rural land planning and landscape design.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of the cultural foundations of territorial planning and landscape design.
Ability to apply methodologies and relevant regulations, analyze and evaluate rural territories, environment, and landscapes.
Skills in the development and critical analysis of projects related to rural areas.

Course syllabus
During the course, the following topics will be presented:
- approach evolution to rural land-use/landscape planning,
- brief history of Italian legislation on land-use/landscape planning,
- Lombardy Region legislation on rural land-use/landscape planning,
- land take and soil sealing,
- analysis and assessment of the characteristics of the rural landscape,
- methods, techniques, and technologies for rural land-use/landscape planning,
- demographic analysis in land use planning,
- the use of restrictions for territory and landscape protection,
- Green Infrastructures and Nature Based Solutions,
- urban greening, active mobility, green streets,
- notes on Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment.
Prerequisites for admission
Not specific requirement.
Teaching methods
Lectures in the classroom, related to theoretical elements and applicative case studies.
Seminars of external experts.
Teaching Resources
The teaching material will be made available on the official MS Teams classroom and will be composed of:
- slides of the lessons,
- technical-scientific insights indicated during the course, and relevant international reference literature,
- reference legislation.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The assessment will be carried out through a written test lasting 1 hour, that will consist of open-ended questions on topics developed during the course.
The evaluation will be based on: the degree of knowledge of the topic, the capacity for critical reasoning, the logical organization of the answers and the ability to synthesize, and the use of appropriate language.
Students with SLD or disability certifications are kindly requested to contact the teacher at least 15 days before the date of the exam session to agree on individual exam requirements. The grade will be communicated to each individual student by e-mail.
The student can accept the proposed grade or make a supplementary oral exam to eventually improve the grade. The supplementary oral exam will go more in depth on the topics of the written exam, firstly, and then deal with other topics of the course program.
Students with SLD and disabilities are asked to contact the teacher via email at least 10 days before the scheduled exam date to agree on any individualized measures.
