Learning objectives
The course aims to provide in-depth preparation on the method of philological investigation, applied to texts in the vernacular of all ages, and in particular to literary texts. The course also aims to make students aware of the evolution of a text within the history of Italian culture.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge
Fundamental concepts of the Lachmannian method.
The different types of innovation (indicative error; indifferent readings; contamination; diffraction).
The different types of editions (diplomatic; interpretative; critical). The different types of critical apparatus (negative or positive).
Skills
Critical ability in the historical interpretation of the texts.
Ability to hierarchize relations between witnesses.
Ability to place the single witness in the linguistic-literary context.
Ability, in the case of Author's Philology, to relate documents with other works by the author.
Mastery of bibliographic and methodological tools

Part A: students must have a modern edition of Gerusalemme Liberata, one of those available on the market.
The course will trace the history of Torquato Tasso's poem on the basis of the volume
Luigi Poma, Studi sul testo della "Gerusalemme liberata", Bologna, Clueb, 2005
Part B: Students should have an edition of Manzoni's Sermoni (in Poesie).
Part C: The manuscript text necessary to follow the lessons will be made available on Ariel.
The complete bibliography will be indicated at the beginning of the course.

Knowledge of the fundamental notions of textual philology.

Lectures. Bibliography and other working materials will be made available on the Ariel website. Class attendance is strongly recommended.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral exam will evaluate the ability to organize the speech, to critically present the subject matter, the precise knowledge on the usual scale of thirty; terminological competence in the use of specific vocabulary.
