Institutional History of Media

Learning objectives
The course provides the student with the general guidelines necessary to understand the Institutional History of Media as well as the methodology necessary to the interpret the issues covered.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will have acquired a general knowledge of the history of media and the role they have played in the institutional, political and economic events of the contemporary world and particularly of italian history.
The course will consolidate student's ability to organize their own learning processes, with reference to the content and methods of the lessons and the texts subject to individual study. By the end of the course the student will also have honed his critical and judgmental skills, thanks to repeated requests to investigate the complexity of the development of the media in the contemporary world.
These skills will be acquired through a direct and continuous meeting with the instructor in the classroom. The discussion around the proposed sources, which will take place from time to time, will be an essential moment of critical reflection and methodological learning. Participation in meetings and seminars organized within the Department of Historical Studies will also be of great importance for this purpose. Students opting not to attend the lessons will be able to make use of the educational tools provided by the instructor on Ariel, deepen their knowledge of main topics through special readings with the agreement with the instructor, and contact the instructor during office hours.

Prerequisites for admission
It is useful to have an adequate knowledge of contemporary history in order to attend the exam.
Teaching methods
Attendance is strongly recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is delivered through lectures aimed primarily at the acquisition of knowledge, competence and specific language of the subject. Discussion with the teacher is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the capacity to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Method: oral exam at the end of the course. A written midterm test is scheduled in the middle of the course.
Evaluation criteria: capacity to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; capacity for critical reflection on the completed work; quality of exposition, competence in the use of specialised lexicon, efficacy, clarity.
