Learning objectives
The course gives a general overview of the history of international and supranational institutions between the XV and XXI centuries and provides students with the specific lexical and conceptual tools of this discipline.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will learn the origins and development of international and supranational institutions between the XV and XXI centuries. They will be able to place events and protagonists in their respective chronological and geographical contexts as well as to use appropriate language tools to express in a clear and effective form the specific concepts and main topics of the discipline.
Students will learn to read critically historiographical works and use the main tools of the discipline, including digital tools, to research and analyze original sources. These skills will be acquired through a direct and continuous discussion with the instructor in classroom. The analysis of sources proposed each time will be an essential moment of critical reflection and methodological learning. Participation in presentations and seminars organized by the instructor will be also instrumental to that. Students opting not to attend classes will be able use of the educational material provided by the instructor, to deepen their knowledge of the main topics through additional readings agreed with the instructor and discuss bilaterally during office hours.

Title of the course: Supranational and international institutions. From military power to the international rule of law in a globalized world (XV-XXI centuries)
Module I. From the great empires of the modern age to the League of Nations.
Module II. After 1919. International institutions between political tensions and socio-economic cooperation in the 20s and 30s.
Module III. Governance of the world, governance of Europe. International and supranational institutions from 1945 to today between politics, economics and society. From the UN to the European Union, from the Imf to the Ecb, from the Ilo to the Unicef and the Unhcr.

Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the admission to the MA degree in historical science
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is strongly recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is aimed primarily at the acquisition of knowledge, competence and specific language of the subject. Discussion with the teacher in the classroom is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the capacity to apply the acquired competence and knowledge. Small study groups may be set up among the students attending the course.

Method: oral exam

- Evaluation criteria: capacity to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; capacity for critical reflection on the completed work; quality of exposition, competence in the use of specialised lexicon, efficacy, clarity.
