Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce contrastive linguistics in general and the linguistic comparison of the Italian and German languages in particular. After a brief introduction to the history of contrast linguistics and comparative linguistics, the course aims to lead students to the discovery of contrast linguistics and its application to specific areas such as translation and teaching of a foreign/second language. The lesson will present the various linguistic levels such as phonology, spelling, morphology, syntax and textuality of the Italian and German languages to learn the main divergences and convergences between the linguistic systems taken into consideration. Explanations are proposed through theoretical reflections an practical exercises (analysis of linguistic structures of texts, short translations).
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge The course aims to provide the relevant knowledge: -specific language terminology - the various methods of linguistic comparison - the main linguistic convergences and divergences of the Italian and German languages At the end of the course, the student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired in the field of translation (Italian-German) and teaching of German L2. Skills At the end of the course the student will be able to identify the main differences and similarities in the language systems of Italian and German. The student will be able to use the various linguistic support tools such as grammars, corpora and dictionaries for a detailed contrastive analysis. In addition, the student will have acquired the ability to use specific language terminology appropriately and understand it (in both Italian and German).

Course syllabus
The course is entitled "Kontrastive Linguistik Italienisch-Deutsch" and is divided into three teaching parts, which will be addressed in sequence:
A: Introduction to Contrastive Linguistics
B: Selected problems of language comparison for Italian and German
C: German>Italian Translation
The course aims to introduce Contrastive linguistics in general and to the linguistic comparison of Italian and German in particular. In unit A the history of Contrastive linguistics and comparative linguistics will be studied. In unit B a presentation of the linguistic comparison and its application to specific areas such as translation and teaching of a foreign/second language will be proposed. The various linguistic levels such as phonology, spelling, morphology, syntax, and textuality of the Italian and German languages will be presented during the lesson in order to know the main divergences and convergences between the language systems taken into consideration. Unit C provides an introduction to translation from German into Italian by applying the skills acquired in Contrastive Linguistics in Units A and B.
The course program is valid until February 2025.
Information for non-attending students
The course program for non-attending students is the same for attending students. Naturally, given the more significant difficulties deriving from a preparation carried out independently, it is recommended that non-attending students devote an adequate amount of time to studying and processing the contents of the program and to supplement the bibliography with further material available online or in the library.
Prerequisites for admission
The course, which is held entirely in German, the examination materials and bibliography presuppose solid language skills in both Italian and German (a B1 level of the CEFR is strongly recommended). Students of Degree Courses other than Languages who do not know German or are beginners will not always be able to rely on Italian translations; therefore, if interested in the course, they will have to contact the teacher in advance to evaluate possible adaptations of the program. Erasmus students or students of other forms of mobility are admitted, provided they have solid skills in Italian and German.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: frontal lessons, seminar activities (group work) and the participation of the student in the seminar activities proposed on selected topics of the course .

Assessment methods and Criteria
The test consists of a 60-minute written examination in German that includes closed and semi-open questions on the course content designed to ascertain the knowledge and skills acquired during the course (unit A ) and a 60-minute written translation from German to Italian (unit C). Unit B involves an oral report on a topic of your choice during the course or alternatively a written paper; the grade on the report or paper is preliminary to the written exam. The course also provides for the possibility of in-progress testing (partial testing). The final grade representing the average of the marks of the individual modules is expressed in thirtieths, and the student has the option of rejecting it (in which case it will be verbalized as "withdrawn").
International or Erasmus incoming students are urged to contact the lecturer promptly. Examination arrangements for students with disabilities and/or SLA should be agreed upon with the lecturer at the beginning of the course, in consultation with the appropriate office.
