Learning objectives
The course aims to draw from the analysis of a specific historical-cultural constellation, seen in its chronological development, general elements of orientation in the framework of the history of the culture of German-speaking countries. The presentation and critical discussion of some fundamental conceptual categories developed in the context of the reference culture will go hand in hand with the reading and analysis of selected texts.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will have to acquire an advanced and critical ability to manage some fundamental categories of analysis in the context of the cultural history of German-speaking countries. These categories will have to be substantiated by the understanding of some important historical-social and historical-cultural dynamics.

In common with German Culture 2:
Mediation as translation (20 hours).
Contacts between cultures require specialised operators capable of carrying out translation practices from one cultural system to another, minimising the loss of communicative content or the weakening of its effectiveness. The aim of this module, in common with German Culture 2, is to provide an overview of some of the translation theories that have accompanied the German discussion on these issues.
Specific part for German culture 1 (20 hours):
Analysis of a specific case of cultural mediation in literary translation. Short history of Italian translations of Franz Kafka's works.
Kafka is one of those authors who is deeply integrated in the canon of world literature. His vitality is renewed from one generation to the next, always maintaining a very high level of presence and effectiveness in readers' preferences and in major cultural debates. This module will examine some of the voices engaged in the task of making Kafka's prose comprehensible to the Italian reader.

Prerequisites for admission
An articulated and advanced knowledge of the fundamental processes of European history from the eighteenth century onwards.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral exam for attending and non-attending students. Students will be asked to demonstrate the assimilation of the course contents, the understanding of the basic conceptual repertoire and the ability to argue independently on some topics proposed by the teacher. The final grade will be expressed out of thirty.
