Learning objectives
At a theoretical level, the course both introduces to the diachronic development of German in order to understand the characteristics of the contemporary language (especially spelling, phonetics and morphology), and deepens the study of syntax (complex subordinate clauses, with particular reference to the contrast with the Italian language, stylistics). At a practical level, it aims to support students to acquire receptive and productive skills, both oral and written. Lectures and language classes aim to develop language skills corresponding to level B2 of the CEFR.
Expected learning outcomes
The expected results in terms of knowledge and understanding are that the student acquires complex syntactic structures, understands the mechanisms determining the phonetic, orthographic, morphological and morphosyntactic evolution of the German language; is able to distinguish between linguistic norm and usage. The expected results in terms of applied competence are the acquisition of language structures and vocabulary corresponding to level B2 for all linguistic-communicative activities: reception (listening and reading) of texts contemporary issues, production of texts and interactions.

Course syllabus
The monographic course is entitled: The lexicon: semantic relations and situational contexts. Theoretical reflections and practical applications (applied linguistics, lexicography).
The course aims to bring students closer to understanding the mechanisms underlying the lexicon, from various perspectives and with various applications. It consists of the following three parts:
A: Pragmatics and the Use of Language in Film [Prof. Christine Arendt] (1. Semester)
Part A is devoted to pragmatics as well as applied linguistics.
After a brief theoretical introduction of pragmatics, the use of language in film will be examined. Central topics will be the language of the Federal Republic/DDR, language as a medium for intercultural translation processes and multilingualism. Language will also be analysed as an expression of different cultural standardisations and situational context. The description will be supplemented by contrastive reflections and practical applications.
B: Semantics [Prof. Carolina Flinz] (2nd Semester)
In B, semantics and semantic relations will be dealt with from a theoretical point of view. In particular, the following topics will be examined: definition of semantics and meaning, semantic relations between words, semantic field, semantic traits, translational meanings (metaphor and metonymy), prototype semantics, polysemy, sentence semantics. The description will be supplemented by contrastive reflections and practical applications, also with the use of corpora and databases.
C: Lexicography [Prof. Carolina Flinz] (2nd semester)
In C, lexicography will be dealt with from a theoretical point of view. In particular, the following topics will be examined: definition of dictionary; classification of dictionaries and portals; functions of lexicographic resources; macrostructure, mediostructure and microstructure; lexicographic process; access structures and cross-references; primary, secondary and tertiary sources; studies on the use of dictionaries. The description will be supplemented by contrastive reflections and practical applications, also with the use of corpora and databases.
The course grants 9 CFUs. It is not possible to acquire only 6.
The course programme is valid until September 2026 (inclusive).

Prerequisites for admission
The course, which is held partially in German, the materials and the examination bibliography presuppose an initial competence of level B1.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: lectures, pair and group work, written papers (Hausarbeiten) and multimedia oral presentations. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the Esercitazioni form.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The examination consists of the following parts, all of which are compulsory:

1) ESERCITAZIONI:
Written and oral examination (the oral examination can only be taken after passing the written part)
a. WRITTEN EXAMINATION:
- ATTENDING STUDENTS: If students actively participate in at least 75% of the exercises, they have access to the partial examinations that take place at the end of each semester. The final grade for the written examination will be the average of the two partial examinations, both of which must be sufficient in every part. In the event of failure or rejection of the grade, students may take the full written examination for non-attending students. Students who refuse the grade for the partials must communicate their decision by e-mail to the lecturer in good time, and in any case before the total written examination takes place.
- NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS: Written examination in official session. The written test (B1 level) can be attended in MAY, SEPTEMBER, and JANUARY, starting with MAY 2025. All details of the exercises required for the written exam will be given on MyAriel. The examination is passed if all required tests reach the grade 18/30.
Students must bring a monolingual German print dictionary with them to the examination. The written examination consists of:
- Test: Grammar and Vocabulary (Grammatik und Wortschatz)
- Summary based on Listening comprehension (Textwiedergabe)
Students may inspect their written examination papers at the office of the Language Teachers.
Please refer to Ariel for details on the type of exercises required in the written examination.
b. ORAL EXAMINATION:
The oral examination can only be taken after passing the written. The oral examination in the language will consist of an approx. 10-minute presentation on a topic of one's choice, followed by an interview with the native speaker on the topic.
The practice exam must be completed within one academic year of the first test passed (written), otherwise the exam will be repeated.
2) CORSO MONOGRAFICO:
The examination differs according to whether students are attending or not.
a. FREQUENTING STUDENTS:
Attending students may take intercourse examinations instead of the official written and oral examinations:
- PART A (20 hours, 3 CFU). Intercourse examination: written examination (questionnaire with multiple choice and open questions) instead of the official written and oral examinations.
- PART B (20 hours, 3 CFU). Intercourse examination: written examination (questionnaire with multiple choice and open questions) instead of the official written and oral examinations.
- PART C (20 hours, 3 CFU). Intercourse examination: written/oral presentation of group work in place of the official written/oral examination. The work will involve the presentation and discussion of the lexicographic process and the production of 10 lexical entries (structure will be provided) extracted from monolingual or bilingual (comparable) corpora on topics of choice.
b. NON-FREQUENCING students:
Examination with written part and oral part (multiple choice questionnaire and with open questions, to be discussed and possibly deepened orally) (Module A and B). For Module C, a presentation must be sent 7 days before the chosen official exam. The presentation must present and discuss the lexicographic process for the production of a lexicographic product with examples of 10 lexical entries extracted from monolingual or bilingual (comparable) corpora on topics of your choice. The presentation will then be discussed at the oral exam.
NB: The oral examination of the ESERCITAZIONI and the written/oral examination of the MONOGRAFICO may be held in the same or different appeals.
International students or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher as soon as possible. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be agreed with the teacher, in agreement with the competent office.
