Learning objectives
The objective is to reach the A2 language level of the CEFR and partly the B1 level (written comprehension) for the exercises and to have adequate knowledge in linguistic analysis for the monographic part. In particular, the monographic part intends to propose the tools and develop the necessary skills to deal with the study and use of the German language in a reflective and metalinguistic way, identifying the main areas of analysis also in a contrastive German-Italian perspective (with particular reference to morphology, syntax and phonetics/phonology).
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: As far as the exercises are concerned, the student must have knowledge of the basic grammatical and lexical structures (level A2 of the CEFR). As far as the monographic part is concerned, the student must be able to use the terminology (in German and Italian) relating to the main linguistic phenomena of the German language with reference to morphology, syntax, phonetics/phonology and handwriting and to define them adequately. Skills: As far as the exercises are concerned, the student must be able to: 1. correctly pronounce words, phrases and periods contextualized in German; 2. understand short written and oral texts; 3. structure and use syntactically correct and semantically relevant main and secondary sentences; 4. to produce short written and oral texts on topics of daily and current relevance. As far as the monographic part is concerned, the student should be able to: 1. actively use the phonetic, morphological and syntactic knowledge learned (correct pronunciation, recognition of morphemes, identification of the meaning of words, appropriate structuring and analysis of German main and secondary sentences); 2. autonomously analyse short German texts from an informative and linguistic (morphological, syntactic and phonological) point of view on the basis of the acquired competences; 3. to produce short German texts of specific textual genres.

Didactic unit A (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Phonetics/phonology and Graphematics
Didactic unit B (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Morphology
Didactic unit C (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Word formation
The course is aimed at first-year students in the Bachelor of Foreign Languages and Literature (both beginners and students with previous knowledge of German.
The course includes the compulsory acquisition of 9 cfu, so students will stick to the full program. The course program is valid until February 2025.
Teaching lasts one year and consists of:
- language exercises (first and second semester);
- a monographic part (units A and B in the first semester, unit C in the second semester).

Teaching methods
The course includes frontal lessons, seminar activities and group work in which the active participation of the student is required as well as the use of multimedia materials.

The choice of texts by Di Meola or Busch/Stenschke depends on the choice of the language in which the student intends to take the oral exam.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Preliminary test + oral examen:
- Exercises: written test in official session + oral test in official session. The written test verifies the knowledge of the basic vocabulary and the fundamentals of German grammar (level A2/B1) and the ability to understand and produce a simple text. The oral test is an interview in German with the mother tongue teacher. Students with a valid certification at level B1 or higher do not have to take the written exam and the oral exam of exercises (the certification must be presented for recognition to the teacher in charge of the course according to the instructions given in class at the beginning of the A.A.).
- Monographic part: oral test in the official session. This test can be taken after passing the written part of the exercises (or the two parts at the end of the semester) and the official oral part of the exercises. The oral test of the exercises and the oral test of the monographic part take place in the same appeal. The oral test of the monographic part consists of open questions and exercises relating to units A, B, and C. At the end of the first semester and at the end of the second semester written partials will be organised (a partial relating to units A and B and a partial relating to unit C): Those who pass both written partials do not have to take the oral test of the monographic part. Those who pass only one of the two partials must take the part missing from the oral examination in the official session. In order to access the written partials of the monographic part, the attendance of lessons is highly recommended. Further information on the structure and content of the written partials will be provided during the lesson.
The final grade for German Language 1 (exercises + monographic part) is given by the following partial grades: average grade for the written part of exercises and the grade for the oral part of exercises, grade for the oral part of the monographic part. Further clarifications will be provided during the lesson and on the teaching site (Ariel portal).
As regards the duration of the validity of the written part marks (exercises and monographic part) and of the written examination of exercises (official session), indications will be given in class and on the teaching site (Ariel portal).
International or Erasmus incoming students are encouraged to contact the teacher promptly.
Examination arrangements for students with disabilities and/or with SLA should be agreed upon at the beginning of the course with the lecturer, in consultation with the appropriate office.
