Learning objectives
The course aligns with the other disciplines of the degree programme in providing a European and international dimension, and is intended for students who have never studied German or have a CEFR language level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) below A1, as it introduces them to the fundamentals of the German language.
It aims to provide students with knowledge of the basic vocabulary and syntactic structures to reach German proficiency at A1 level under the CEFR, with regard to oral and written comprehension and production skills.
Knowledge and skills provided by the course aim to help students further their German learning, with a view to acquiring the ability to speak in more foreign languages. This is a requirement for working in international contexts and is in line with the professional profile to be trained during the degree programme.
In the frame of the SIE degree programme, students may also take the course "Advanced Language Skills: German" (level A2),which is worth 3 credits (CFU).The course may be included in the study plan as "further training activities", or advanced language courses offered by the University as elective activities.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students are expected to know the basic vocabulary and grammar structures needed to understand everyday expressions and simple sentences.
They will also have to reach German proficiency at least at A1 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which includes having have a good command of basic linguistic skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
To acquire these abilities, students are strongly recommended to actively participate in all the learning activities held in the class.

Course syllabus
The following topics will be covered during the course:

- Main rules of pronunciation;
- Lexicon of level A1;
- Determinative and indeterminative articles (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive case);
- Gender of nouns;
- Declination of adjectives;
- Auxiliary, modal and separable verbs (indicative present, Perfekt and Präteritum);
- Regular and irregular verbs (indicative present, imperative, Perfekt and Präteritum);
- Verbs with prepositions;
- Structure of the main clauses.

Teaching methods
The lessons are of a seminar nature and involve the active participation of the students.
The teaching uses e-learning tools on Moodle which will be supportive during the learning phase and which contain models of the final test.
Teaching Resources
Teaching materials will be provided by the lecturer on the Moodle platform.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The actual achievement of the expected learning outcomes will be ascertained through a written and an oral examination:
Written examination: Students will have to carry out exercises in grammar and vocabulary filling, reformulation and multiple-choice) according to the model of those proposed during the lessons (30 minutes). The use of mono- and/or bilingual dictionaries is not permitted.
The written exam is computerized.
Oral examination: includes short open questions on the topics covered during the course.
