Learning objectives
The subject matter examined in the course covers the basics of physical geology and Earth System Science, and the objectives of the course are to provide students with a general understanding of this discipline.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of principles of basic geology. Ability to analyze natural geological systems in their complexity and interconnection. Ability to recognize and describe the main rock types of the earth's crust . Ability to read and interpret geologic maps.

Course syllabus
The program of the lectures aims at providing a basic general knowledge of the fundamental geological processes active on Earth. In particular, the program consists of the following topics: evolution of the solar system and the Earth; evolution of the atmosphere; principles of atmospheric circulation ; principles of ocean circulation; continental river depositional environments; continental desert depositional environments; continental glacial depositional environments; marine depositional environments of the deep sea and shallow waters; Earthquakes and seismic hazard; Volcanoes; Earth's interior and Earth's magnetic field; elements of plate tectonics; concepts of stratigraphy: biostratigraphy; magnetostratigraphy, isotopic stratigraphy, astrostratigrafia; radiometric dating; geological evolution of the Italian peninsula.
The program of the practicals consists of exercises to learn reading and understanding geological maps as well as describing and classifying sedimentary rock types.

Teaching methods
The teaching method of the lectures is the classic unidirectional theory-based method of knowledge transfer 'from-teacher-to-student'. Students are however allowed to interrupt the one-way flow of teacher-student information by triggering debates or requests for clarification. The didactic method of the practicals consists in part of the classic unidirectional teacher-student transfer of knowledge and in part of a heuristic-participatory approach with the creation of working groups at the discretion of the teacher.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final test (Appello) consists of a practical test preparatory to a written test. The practical test consists of exercises concerning the reading and understanding of geological maps and the description of sedimentary rock samples. The written test consists of a series of questions relating to the contents of the course, both those of the exercises and of the lectures. The practical test must be taken before the written test. The practical test is valid for one year since it is taken. The final grade is calculated as follows:
