Gender Based Violence: an Interdisciplinary Approach

Learning objectives
The teaching activity aims to provide students of any faculty of the University and with any high school background with the skills to critically identify the issues underlying the phenomenon of gender-based violence and learn the tools detach, prevent and overcome it. The final goal is to enhance the awareness of students in this fiedl.
Expected learning outcomes
Through theoretical and practical lessons, the aim is to test not only the assimilation of a series of general and abstract notions relating to the topics addressed in the course, but also the critical ability to detect problematic issues in the subject and to identify possible solutions.

The course programme includes an in-depth examination of the issues underlying the effective guarantee and implementation of the principle of gender equality in the various fields of interest:
- Violence against women and gender inequality. From the lack of constitutional implementation to inclusion strategies
- From a criminal law and honor of the family-centered perspective to the centrality of the consent (because punishing is not enough)
- The forms of violence: sexual, psychological, physical, economic
- The cycle of violence
- Risk assessment and prevention of gender-based violence
- Sexual and domestic violence as health issues
- Classification of the profiles and methods of recovery of the perpetrator of the violence, with attention to criminological perspective
- Gender-based violence in the language of the media: stereotypes and normalization of the emergency
- Victims twice (secundary victimization): women who suffer violence in the process and in the relationship with the anti-violence network.
- Violence against women with disabilities
- Gender-based violence, a phenomenon without borders: the role of supranational law

Teaching methods
The course includes lectures that will alternate between theoretical frontal introductory profiles and practical/interactive ones.
Classes will be available for in-person attendance in room 420.
For students attending classes at locations other than via Festa del Perdono, online connectivity will be provided.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Following the closing of registrations, scheduled from 15 January to 15 February, those who are registered will be asked to take part in the activities of the module, according to the instructions available on the My Air platform, where the calendar of meetings will also be published, as soon as possible, and in any case by January 25th: https://myariel.unimi.it/course/view.php?id=1255
Lessons will be held from the end of February to the end of April.
The lessons will be held by Professor Pellizzone. University professors from other disciplines (criminology, gynecology, criminal law), experts in gender violence, and operators of anti-violence centers will also be invited, in order to ensure attention to the concrete aspects of the subject, so as to raise awareness and inform students and the students on the tools to recognize and combat gender violence.
-Final test: Essay of maximum 2000 words, developed at home by the students, starting from an outline offered by the teacher and using what is illustrated and shared in class, to be sent by May 5th.
Students will be asked to actively participate in the lessons: in particular, after having offered the tools and general notions on the various topics, they will be asked to practice and discuss with the teachers and other students with particular reference to specific concrete cases.
Attendance is compulsory (80% of lessons).
