Learning objectives
The course aims to enable students to know and to understand French grammatical structures, in particular complex sentences, and to know and understand formal and semantic structure of French lexicon: recognizing simple and constructed lexical units, being aware of lexical creation processes and loan words; distinguishing between polysemy and homonymy, recognizing the main tropes underlying changes of meaning, analysing key semantic relationships.
Practical language classes objectives: to consolidate and to develop reception, production and interaction at different levels, corresponding to the CEFR levels B1, B1+.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: students knows and understands
French grammatical structures and in particular on complex sentences; they know the basics of French lexicology.
Skills: students are able to analyze - including in a contrastive way - the characteristics of French complex phrases, and to master their use to improve written and oral production; they will also expand their active and passive lexical competence.

Skills acquired through Practical language classes
Achievement of B1+ level for all linguistic-communicative activities. Reception: ability to listen and to understand contemporary audiovisual texts in standard French (films, documentaries, television broadcasts); ability to follow (with guidance) French lessons / lectures with argumentative structure; reading and understanding news articles / dossiers in standard French on current issues recognizing the author's attitudes / points of view; reading and understanding contemporary fiction and non-fiction texts.
Production: expressing oneself orally in a clear and correct manner from the point of view of morphosyntax and pronunciation; knowing how to write short clear and detailed texts with the help of a monolingual dictionary, using linguistically correct French with relevant lexical choices.
Interaction: actively participate in conversations / interactions in French on familiar topics (also with reference to texts and films covered by the program).

Course syllabus
The course, entitled "French lexicology: morphology, semantics, lexical analysis of texts", consists of three parts:
1st semester
A (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Origins of French vocabulary and word formation; the representation of the vocabulary in language dictionaries.
B (20 hours, 3 ECTS): The meaning of words.
2nd semester
C (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Words in context.

As the acquisition of 9 ECTS is compulsory for this course, students will have to follow the full program.

Parts A and B will be dedicated to the analysis of the formal and semantic organization of vocabulary in order to make students aware of the peculiar characteristics of the French lexical system also from a French-Italian contrasting point of view (origins of the French lexicon; lexical morphology: derivation, composition, borrowing; lexicon in dictionaries; lexical semantics: polysemy and homonymy, semantic relations).
Part C will introduce students to the analysis of word usage in different context in order to achieve a deeper knowledge of the French lexicon and a better understanding of texts. Original documents corresponding to different text types will be proposed (informative, explanatory, argumentative, musical, cinematographic text, etc.). Word formation, their polysemy, lexical relations, linguistic register, lexical domaines will be analysed.

The programme is valid until September 2026.
Prerequisites for admission
The course, which is held in French, the examination materials and bibliography presuppose an initial B1 level in progress.
In order to take the French 2 exam, it is a requirement to have passed both the French 1 and the French Literature 1 exams.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: face-to-face lessons, face-to-face activities. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the Esercitazioni form.

Note to students not attending
Students who are not attending can contact the lecturer before beginning exam preparation. Given the greater difficulties arising from self-preparation, it is recommended to devote sufficient time to study and develop the content of the program.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Written and oral examination (entirely in French):

Written part concerning practical classes (only three annual calls: May, September and January): grammar test (25 min.); dictation (25 min.); proof of comprehension and written production from a written document (2hrs; only for this test the use of a monolingual dictionary is allowed).
In order to pass the written part, these two conditions must be met: a) not more than 1 test under 18/30, b) reach an overall average of at least 18/30.
The results will be published on the MyAriel page of French 2.
Students can view their written exam papers by making an appointment with the Language Collaborators and Experts.

Oral part relating to the pratical classes: conversation in French based on the collection of materials for oral expression in the programme (assessed in 30/30).
Oral part related to the monographic Course: oral examination in French on the course content (evaluated in 30/30).
The average between the two parts, to be taken in the same session, constitutes the mark of the oral part.
The assessment on unit C of the monographic course concludes the oral part for all students.

The weighted average between written and oral marks will be calculated when entering the exam results.

The written and oral parts must refer to the same year and may be taken in free succession.

Partial tests are scheduled for the different parts of the exam.

IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO COMPLETE BOTH PARTS OF THE EXAMINATION WITHIN 12 MONTHS.

The entering of results takes place:
- at the end of the oral test, if the written test has been taken previously
- during the first oral session after the written test, if the oral test has been taken previously. In the latter case, students must necessarily register and attend the oral assessment session, even if they already have two marks (oral and written test).

If the registration of the French language 2 exam takes place before the French language 1 and French literature 1 exam, it will be cancelled by the secretariat and the oral exam must be repeated.

International students or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the lecturers as soon as possible. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be agreed with the lecturers, in agreement with the competent office.
