Learning objectives
The course aims to provide:
- the epistemological, theoretical and methodological basis of the main criminological issues discussed in Italy and abroad
- the skills for understanding and the critically interpreting "criminal matter", the criminal justice system and criminal policies
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will have acquired:
- an understanding of the main theories of crime, punishment, penal institutions and social reaction to crime;
- knowledge of the main methods used in criminological research;
- the ability to interpret violence, insecurity and other contemporary phenomena and to evaluate crime policies.

The different approaches of criminology will be analyzed.
The following topics will be covered:
- Field and object of criminology.
- Criminology, law and culture.
- Historical development of criminology.
- Methods of criminological research.
- Sociological and Psychological theories of crime.
- Clinical criminology.
. Individual and collective violence.
. Fear of crime and social reaction.
. Prison and other forms of detention.
. The police and the use of force .
Teaching methods
Lectures highly interacting with the class.
Use of multimedia tools
Subject matter experts will be invited to speak on specific topics.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will take place in oral form, with evaluation expressed in thirtieths (30/30).
Attending students will be able to integrate the notions of the textbooks with the class notes.
