Learning objectives
The course provides the broad outlines of contemporary history and the tools necessary to critically understand historical periods, their links and the principal themes (political, economic, social, cultur-al, religious) since 1815 to the present day.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Recognize the fundamental lexicon for understanding historical events of the Contemporary Age, in their development.
- Establish space-time correlations among the complex dynamics of the contemporary world, with particular attention to the evolution of modern tought.

- Use appropriately the sources, the basic bibliographic and IT tools, and historical maps for historiographic research.

Part III: Religion and Politics during the 20th Century
The course aims to investigate the principal issues and most important turning points of social and political history of 19th and 20th century. A particular attention will be attributed to: the demographic dynamics and migrations; the transformations of the Mediterranean sea and of the Middle East; the relation between political and religious aspects; the concept of nation and nationalism; modern antisemitism; Italian political history.

The course aims to investigate the principal issues and most important turning points of social and political history of 19th and 20th century. Prerequisites for admission
It will be useful a preliminary knowledge of the Contemporary History (19th and 20th century) and of the world geography.
Teaching methods
Class will be organized in lectures focused on the most important facts and turning points of the Contemporary History. The lectures will analyse an international perspective, with particular regard for the long period dynamics, political transformations and economic and culture processes of modernization. The course aims to implement the students' ability to establish connections between different facts and periods and to use an adequate vocabulary, based on a solid historical knowledge.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will consist in an oral interview on the programme, regarding both the general issues and the specific aspects. It will test the students' knowledge and competence.
