Learning objectives
The course aims at introducing students to the comparative study of European and non-European literatures, as well as to the theoretical and methodological issues raised by this approach.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: Students will achieve an in-depth knowledge of a selection of authors and works from several European and non-European literatures and they will gain a better understanding of the theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of literature.

Competence: By approaching a plurality of historical and cultural horizons in multiple languages, students will improve their hermeneutical competences and their ability to dialog with different cultures. At the end of the course, they will be able to autonomously apply the knowledge and the competences they will have gained to the study of literary works from different times and literatures.

Course syllabus
The course will focus on some works by Daniele Del Giudice, Joseph Conrad and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. More specifically, parts A and B will be centred on Del Giudice's "Staccando l'ombra da terra" and some essays from the collections "In questa luce" and "Del narrare"; before and after that, novels, short stories and other texts by Conrad—"Youth", "Typhoon" and "Lord Jim"—and by Saint-Exupéry—"Courrier Sud", "Vol de nuit" and "Terre des hommes"—will be presented and discussed. Finally, in part C, we will address other works, variously related to those discussed in the previous parts, both by Conrad and Saint-Exupéry and by other authors such as Roald Dahl and Hayao Miyazaki (the reading list for part C will be defined with the attending students).

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "Courrier Sud", "Vol de nuit" and "Terre des hommes".

Assessment methods and Criteria
Students preparing the examination for 6 ECTS credits must study parts A and B. Students preparing for the 9 ECTS credits examination must study parts A, B and C.
For parts A and B, the examination will consist of an interview in which students will have to present the works on the syllabus and critically discuss them in relation to the issues addressed during the course. Marks will range from 18 to 30/30. The exam will assess knowledge of the topics covered, the ability to discuss them clearly and critically, combining theoretical reflection and analysis of the texts, the use of precise and rigorous language, including mastery of the subject's specialist vocabulary, and the correctness of any references to the history of literature and criticism.
For Part C, attending students will carry out group work, coordinated by the teacher, and present the results, which will be assessed (further information will be given in class). Non-attending students will study the texts that will be indicated on the course's Ariel website (see sections "Programma" and "Materiali di riferimento") and discuss them at the oral exam.
