Clinical and Therapeutic Approach At Soft Tissue Surgical Diseases in Dog and Cat
A.Y. 2024/2025
Learning objectives
Teaching activities will take place mainly in the hospital (visiting and operating rooms, hospitalization ward, pathology ward) for direct management of clinical cases (interpretation of signs and symptoms, proper management of the diagnostic therapeutic algorithm, surgical activity in the operating room, management of surgical complications), interpretation of relevant histological findings and necroscopy examinations, with moments devoted to discussion of clinical and pathological cases with theoretical insights, making use of discussion and presentations of published scientific articles.
Expected learning outcomes
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the treatment modalities of the most frequent affections of surgical diseases of the dog's soft tissues and their main histopathological aspects. In addition, the student should demonstrate knowledge and concepts that enable him/her to independently propose differential diagnoses (clinical and histopathological) referred to the individual patient.
Autonomy of judgment. The student should demonstrate the ability to correctly describe the lesions and pathologies of surgical interest as well as the outcomes of the collateral examinations performed including the processing of the histopathological specimen and its interpretation.
Communication skills. The student should demonstrate the ability to communicate the skills acquired with appropriate terminology and to independently elaborate concepts and insights on soft tissue diseases of surgical interest in the dog and cat and related histopathology.
Ability to learn. The student is expected to demonstrate useful learning ability in order to independently increase knowledge of new and emerging aspects in the area of soft tissue diseases of surgical interest in the dog and cat and related histopathology

- Ability to present in descending order of probability of therapeutic success, the treatment options ( surgical and non-surgical) available
- Ability to describe in correct chronological order the surgical act
- Ability to list in order of frequency the possible complications
- Ability to interpret the histopathological report and propose adjuvant therapies to surgery (if any) and its prognosis

Istopathology of surgical biopsy
Course syllabus
The histological diagnosis of surgical pathologies is one of the main branches of anatomical pathology. It involves the study of tissues removed from patients before or during surgery, with the dual purpose of formulating a diagnosis and assisting the clinician in determining the treatment plan.
The module consists of 16 practical hours, divided as follows:
- Collection and fixation of samples: 1 hour
- Examination of fresh biopsy preparations, evaluation of margins and orientation, selection, and sampling of representative areas for histopathological diagnosis: 2 hours
- Use and indications of different fixation methods: 1 hour
- Techniques for evaluating histopathological surgical margins: 2 hours
- Evaluation of histological preparation and formulation of differential diagnoses: 6 hours
- Principles of application and interpretation of special histochemical staining: 1 hour
- Principles of application and interpretation of immunohistochemical staining: 1 hour
- Interpretation of the histopathological report (for effective communication of the diagnostic outcome and prognostic data to the owner): 2 hours

Teaching methods
The course will employ a blended approach, integrating seminar sessions with practical activities in the laboratories of pathology (trimming room and microscopy lab). Self-assessment moments will be incorporated, allowing students to examine histopathological specimens under the guidance of the instructor.
Teaching Resources
The instructor will provide participants with PowerPoint files covering the practical aspects of the course, along with articles sourced from noteworthy scientific journals.
Special histology pf soft tissue pathologies
Course syllabus
The present course is outlined as the advancement of the previous course, which was devoted to the acquisition of the basics concerning the treatment of histological specimens of a biopsy nature, and to provide the student with the practical knowledge necessary for the diagnosis of pathologies that, from a surgical point of view, affect the soft tissues of companion animals.
The Module consists of 16 practical hours divided as follows.
- Inflammatory soft tissue pathologies of surgical and post-surgical interest 4 hours
- Neoplastic pathologies of soft tissues 8h
- Lymph node findings of surgical soft tissue pathologies 2 hours
- Evaluation of histological findings of clinical cases approached during the course 2 hours

Teaching methods
The course will be conducted by alternating seminar activities with hands-on observation of histological preparations related to soft tissue surgical pathologies. There will also be time for self-assessment (examination of histopathological preparations) under the supervision of the lecturer.
Teaching Resources
The lecturer will provide ppt files of the exercise parts and articles from peer reviewed scientific journals.
