Learning objectives
Getting to know and understanding the basic psychological functions and the fundamental mechanisms used by individuals interacting with the natural and social environment as they adapt to it.
Obtaining notions about appropriate management of the relationship with the patients, while identifying their disease management style and personal and social resources. Considering the biopsychosocial perspective when it comes to the sharing of roles and responsibilities of both patients and healthcare professionals.
To get to know and understand the influence of social norms and beliefs specific to the culture of origin of the patients when it comes to the conception of health and disease in a multi-ethnic society. This with particular reference to the management of these patients, the perception of the role of the healthcare professionals, to the modalities of communication regarding the symptoms and the expectations regarding the treatment they are receiving.
Acquire knowledge required in order to establish effective and appropriate communication and
relationships with the patients and their family members, as well as with other healthcare
professionals, by being aware of one's own values and others' values.
Deepening the knowledge regarding the professional and ethical basis of the relationship of trust with the assisted people in order to provide the protection of their safety, privacy and dignity.
Acquire the knowledge to develop skills in the helping relationship with the assisted person.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will learn notions regarding the basis of communication and the helping relationship
The student will identify the basic psychological functions and the fundamental mechanisms utilized in the interaction with the environment.
The student will identify the main methodologies when it comes to the helping relationship with the patient and their family members.

The second part of the course will focus on the theories and constructs of health psychology, declining the contents of the first part in the specific health field. In particular, the following topics will be addressed:
- Promoting well-being and quality of life
- Psychological resources of the patient in disease management
- Recent models of disease management: individual and contextual aspects
- The relationship with the patient in time and chronic situations.

Course syllabus
The first part of the course will address the fundamental topics of general psychology, in order to provide students with the basic concepts for understanding mental processes and individual behavior. In particular, the themes will be:
· perception
· learning and memory
· thought, intelligence, creativity
· motivation
· emotions
· interaction between individual and reference cultural context.
The second part of the course will focus on the theories and constructs of health psychology, declining the contents of the first part in the specific health field. In particular, the following topics will be addressed:
- Promoting well-being and quality of life
- Psychological resources of the patient in disease management
- Recent models of disease management: individual and contextual aspects
- The relationship with the patient in time and chronic situations.

- Psychological processes of mourning
- Communication in difficult conversations: conversation with the patient with a bad prognosis.
- Communication in difficult conversations: conversation with the dying patient and family.
- Communication in difficult conversations: conversation with the patient when discussing sexual issues.
- Health practitioner's work experience: theoretical background.
