Archaeology of Magna Grecia

Learning objectives
The course aims to present the Greek civilization in southern Italy and Sicily through the archaeological evidence returned by the cities and the territory, and to provide an update on the most current issues. Ample space will be given to the problem of apoikìa and to the archeology of 'encounters' (8th and 7th centuries BC), to ways of living in cities and the territory, as well as to the sacred space.

Part A (20 hours, 3 CFU): The Archaeology of Magna Graecia. Places, methods, and protagonists .
Part B (20 hours, 3 CFU): The Greek Archaeology in Sicily. Places, methods, and protagonists.
Part A will introduce the main issues inherent in the subject and then focus on the analysis of several case studies represented by different colonial foundations. Part B will address issues related to Greek colonial foundations in Sicily, then making thematic focuses on specific topics.
Students who plan to take the 9cfu exam will be given additional bibliography at the beginning of the course.
Students have the opportunity to attend the Conference "The Day after Tomorrow: Resilience and Recovery between City and Countryside in the Greek World" to be held in Basel on January 21-23, 2025 (for a total of 20 hours. The programme will be uploaded to MyAriel at the beginning of the first semester). The participation in the Conference will be worth 3cfu of laboratory/seminar/stage.

The course is open to everyone; Archeology and Greek art and Greek history exams are recommended

Assessment methods and Criteria
