Learning objectives
The course aims to teach: (a) the fundamentals and applications of the most common techniques of instrumental chemical analysis; (b) analytical procedures suitable for various classes of artistic and archaeological materials; (c) basic information about advanced techniques currently applied in the investigation of cultural heritage materials.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students will be able to solve analytical problems of intermediate difficulty, especially regarding cultural heritage materials, developing an analytical procedure and interpreting the resulting experimental data.
Single course

This course can be attended as a single course.

Lesson period
First semester
Course syllabus
Fundamentals and applications of: absorption and emission atomic spectroscopy; multivariate data analysis; UV-visible molecular absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence; IR and Raman spectroscopy; X-ray diffraction; SEM-EDX; GC and HPLC; mass spectrometry and GC-MS. Practical demonstrations of the application of the various techniques to materials of artistic or archaeological interest.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of the fundamentals of general and inorganic chemistry is required.

For the students of the master's degree course in Archaeology, the fundamentals of chemistry and physics (especially optics) learned in high school can be of help.
Teaching methods
The teaching is based on frontal lessons.
The course web page is present on the MyAriel platform at the link https://myariel.unimi.it/course/view.php?id=4343.
Teaching Resources
The reference material is constituted by the slides of the lessons, made available on the web page of the course.

ONLY the students of the master's degree course in Archaeology, IN ADDITION to the content of the slides, can consult the text by L. Paolillo e I. Giudicianni, "La Diagnostica nei Beni Culturali. Moderni Metodi di Indagine", Loghia, Napoli, 2009, exclusively for regarding the fundamentals of the techniques explained in the lessons. Regarding the applications, the contents of the slides should be used as reference material.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists in a written test including 6 questions with open-ended but short answers about the fundamentals of the analytical techniques described in the lessons and 4 questions, always with open-ended but short answers, about specific analytical problems regarding materials of artistic or archaeological interest. To each correct answer 3 points will be assigned. A sufficient result will be reached if at least 12 points are obtained in the first group of 6 questions and at least 6 points in the second group of 4 questions. The exam lasts one hour and a quarter.
The results, expressed in a scale from 1 to 30, are communicated by the electronic service Vweb.

For the students of the master's degree course in Archaeology, the exam consists in a written test including 5 questions with open answers but with limited length about analytical procedures for the diagnostics of the archaeological cultural heritage materials. The exam lasts one hour.
The results, expressed in a scale from 1 to 30, are communicated by the electronic service Vweb.
