Theory and Techniques of Scandinavian Translation

Learning objectives
The course aims to present the most relevant theories and discussions in the field of translation studies. These ideas will find concrete application on a number of translations from the three Scandinavian languages into Italian.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able to discuss the principal issues at stake in translation studies. They will develop translation skills on literary texts from the three Scandinavian languages into Italian, identifying the main problems and discussing possible solutions.

Course syllabus
USING THE APPROPRIATE REGISTER, BOTH STYLISTIC AND LINGUISTIC, IN ORDER TO AVOID NEUTRAL TRANSLATION. The course (9 or 6 ECTS) aims to present the most relevant theories in the field of translation studies. These ideas will find concrete application on a selection of translations from the three Scandinavian languages into Italian.

Unit B Translating high level linguistic registers
Unit C Translating everyday language and slang
Each unit has a weekly appointment.
UNIT A IS COMPULSORY FOR ALL THE STUDENTS. STUDENTS TAKING THIS COURSE FOR 6 ETCS CAN, IN ADDITION, CHOOSE BETWEEN UNIT B AND UNIT C.

Prerequisites for admission
A thorough knowledge of one of the three Scandinavian languages is required, as well as good passive skills in the other two.
Teaching methods
The teaching methodology combines lectures and translation exercises in the classroom. The study of secondary literature is individual.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Students will be assessed through an oral examination conducted by the instructor. In addition, they are required to send to the instructor at least one week before the examination, all the texts translated during classes, in their final version.
The final grade is awarded on a 30-point scale. Students can reject the final grade (which will be recorded as "ritirato").
International and incoming Erasmus students who intend to take this course are requested to contact the instructor upon arrival.
