Training Course 06: Genetics and Management of Companion Animals
A.Y. 2020/2021
Learning objectives
The aim of this course is to provide the practical knowledge that are needed for the management and feed of companion animals, in order to meet the needs of the customers of a clinical vet. The focus will be on dogs and cats mainly, but also on rodents and birds. Further attention will be given to the prevention of genetically transmitted diseases. Another important theme concerns the pathogenic and clinical aspects of diseases dealing with metabolism and feed, to develop specific diets to prevent them and to identify the best diet as therapeutic support. Furthermore, unconventional but widespread species will be treated. We will visit also breeding and productive facilities
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
-managing hereditary disorders with breeding programs
-monitoring of morphological characters useful in breeding programs
-knowledge of a proper formulation of industrial and homemade dietary plans for dogs and cats
-management of the main species belonging to NAC (new pet animals: rodents and lagomorphs)
To be able to apply knowledge to:
-read the results of pedigree and select purebred breeding
-develop specific diets as therapeutic support for dogs and cats
-understand pet food labels and because of the new tendencies in the food market
-evaluate the behavior of the small pets and the environmental enrichments used in the normal breeding routine

Prerequisites for admission
To attend the elective course, the student must have passed all the exams of the third year and he must have attended the courses of the first semester of the 5th year. It is advised a basic knowledge of genetics, biology and pets nutrition because it facilitates the comprehension of the subject
Assessment methods and Criteria
Learning will be assessed during all the practical activities of the course. Clinical rotation and modules of elective activity contribute in a different way to the definition of the final mark.
In clinical rotation, assessment of skills will be carried out in itinere by each teacher during clinical and diagnostic practical activities. Each specific practical competence carried out by the student will be attested through the electronic logbook by the teacher in whose presence this will be carried out. The regular frequency of activities and the acquisition of skills that the student will have to learn and possess at the end of the activity will result in an "approved" assessment.
At the end of the course, for the elective modules of the course there will be an oral test. It will be evaluated in thirtieths and the final mark will take into account the accuracy and the quality of the answers

Genetic pathologies and their prevention
Course syllabus
The course will focus on canine and feline inherited diseases with particular attention to molecular genetic diagnostic procedures used in international laboratories. The prevention and eradication of hereditary pathologies through breeding plans management will be studied. The aim of the genetic course section is to supply an effective tool in genetic study for dogs and cats. The main genetic principles will be taught in the course to be applied in dog and cat breeding programs and selection choices.
Teaching methods
The lectures will be held at the university classrooms; field trips to some dog breeding centers

Companion animals' nutrition and dietary management
Course syllabus
The general aim of this course is to contribute to the formulation of nutritionally balanced diets for different stages of the life of dog and cat, while complying with relevant EU legislation on dog and cat nutrition. To achieve this objective, up-to-date scientific knowledge on cat and dog nutrition, minimum and maximum nutrient levels, guidance for the assessment of the nutritional value of pet foods, practical nutrient recommendations for management of nutrition will be discussed. Nutrient requirements, vary considerably even between animals kept under the same conditions, will be evaluated in relation to the age, breed, body size, body condition, insulation characteristics of skin and hair coat, temperament, health status or activity and environmental factors. Particular attention will be posed on the education on understanding pet food labels and on the guidelines for homemade diets to promote animal care

Small pets
Course syllabus
In the module "Small Pets: Management and Behavior " all the aspects of the management of the main species belonging to NAC (new pet animals) will be investigated, with particular reference to rodents and lagomorphs, in compliance with the regulations in the field of animal welfare.
It will also illustrate their use as animals for scientific research purposes, in accordance with the principle of 3R.
A special study will cover methods for assessing the behaviour of animals through non-invasive imaging methods and the environmental enrichments used in the normal breeding routine

Clinical Rotation
Course syllabus
In the document of the Day one competences "(DOCs), drawn up by the European Coordinating Committee on Veterinary Training, there is a list of knowledge and skills that the new graduate must possess. The electronic logbook lists the practical skills that the student must acquire to satisfy what is reported in the DOCs document. The hospital rotation is aimed at making the student acquire the skills and competences shown in the electronic logbook which from time to time it will be appropriate to apply on patients and case studies assigned.
Teaching methods
Practical work on referred for visit and hospitalized patients and on biological material provided for diagnostic purposes at the Teaching Veterinary Hospital. The work will be carried out by the students individually or in groups under the direct guidance of the teachers. All students will carry out activities in the Companion Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital, in the Ruminant and Swine Clinic, in Equine Clinic and in the facilities of the diagnostic services.
Teaching Resources
No specific reference material is foreseen. In relation to the activities carried out from time to time, students may be asked to research and discuss scientific literature on specific cases observed.
