Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the basic theoretical knowledge to analyze the health economics and the health market. The elements that distinguish the health markets and the specificities that characterize the Italian NHS will be illustrated. The main tools to analyze the efficiency and equity issues in the health sector will be accurately presented.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will know: the basic theoretical aspects to analyze the health economics and the health market; the elements that distinguish health markets; the specific elements that characterize the Italian NHS. The student will be aware of the main tools to analyze the efficiency and the equity issues in the healthcare sector.

1. Introduction to health economics and international context
2. Demand for health care: (i) need and demand for health, (ii) demand or health care, (iii) Grossman model and its limitation, (iv) demand for healthcare in a static context
3. Agency: (i) GP-patient (ii) induced demand
4. Supply of health care: (i) clinician as supplier, (ii) hospital as a firm, (iii) measure and indices of productivity.
5. Waiting times and waiting lists
6. Prevention
7. Basic elements of pharma-economics
8. Economic evaluation: (i) cost of life and costs in health, (ii) cost-benefit, cost-efficacy and cost-utility in healthcare sector.
9. Macroeconomics and health policy: (i) public intervention, (ii) equity, (iii) insurance market.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no formal entry requirements. However, in order to fully understand several concepts that will be deepened during the course, students have to be aware of the basic concepts of Microeconomics, Economics and Public Economics.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Attendees: presence at lectures (10%) + small comments on the topics presented during lectures (30%) + final essay 2-3 pages long (30%) + written exam (1h) with open questions (30%).

NON-attendees: writing a 5-6 pages long essay on one of the possible auxiliary papers that will be listed by the end of the course (50%) + written exam (2h) with open questions (50%).
