Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the challenges of corporate communication by looking at communication theory, the difficulties of institutional and political communication and business language useful to function in workplace settings.

Teaching format
The lessons and the laboratory practice will take place on Microsoft Teams platform according to the published time schedule and calendar. The lessons will be recorded and made available to the students on the same platform.
The syllabus and the teaching material for the course remain the same.

Final testing and evaluation
The final exam will be online, on Microsoft Teams platform, and it will have the format described in the syllabus.
Course syllabus
The course syllabus includes the study of some essential aspects of English linguistics, also in relation to its use as lingua franca. Some theoretical issues regarding management and communication will be introduced by making specific reference to formal communication skills. The specialized register will be introduced through activities of reading/listening and video-watching comprehension of content-specific texts. Ad hoc activities and exercises will allow to use the specialized language and registers in different contexts, and to consolidate language aspects required for the B1 level (CEFR), to which the course refers. The texts and teaching material used for the course come from the textbook and from other specialized sources which will be made available on Ariel.
The syllabus is organized into 3 modules:
Module 1: English for business communication; general notions on communication, effective communication skills; some managerial contexts; registers, politeness and business etiquette; applying for a job; preparing for a job interview. Language structures: future tenses, modal verbs, courtesy formulas.
Module 2: some bases of management theory, leadership, decision making, promoting and persuading, team work, negotiating; speaking on the phone; writing memos, summarizing, writing an email; planning and organizing. Language structures and functions: first and second conditionals, speaking about the past, some passive tenses.
Module 3: Management sectors; dealing with customers/clients; management of the human resources; intercultural issues; ethics and social responsibility; a case study, preparing a presentation to inform/to persuade. Language structures and functions: speaking and writing skills.
Prerequisites for admission
Students must have passed a Placement Test in English (more info on how and when to sit for the Placement Test, see here: https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/competenze-linguistiche/placement-test-test-di-ingresso-e-corsi-di-inglese).
Teaching methods
Lessons will have a mixed layout, they will go from teacher-fronted to more student's centered format. They will include input-providing steps with the watching/listening /reading of texts or presentations and comprehension activities, exercises for lexicon expansion and grammar consolidation. Students will also be asked to analyze cases in context and produce texts in simulated contexts.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will take place online, it will consist in a listening test with true/false comprehension questions; in a set of multiple-choice questions regarding the lexicon, use of English, communicative strategies and content covered during the course; and in a reading test with comprehension exercises.
The final exam will cover all materials made available or listed on Ariel, all contents and topics covered in class.
