Director of Specialization School
Graduates in Veterinary Medicine and in possession of the qualification to exercise the profession of veterinarian are admitted to the School in a number established each year by the School Council. In addition to ordinary posts, a reserve of posts is established for Veterinarians who are permanent employees of public bodies with whom agreements are stipulated in accordance with the provisions of the law.
Access to the School is subject to an admission contest, by examination and by qualifications. The admission exam consists of a written test with multiple choice questions relating to the disciplinary area of the School. The selection procedures are defined in the competition announcement. Candidates who, in relation to the number of places available, have placed themselves in a useful position in the ranking of suitable candidates are admitted attending the School.
To obtain the specialization diploma, the trainee is required to pass all the exams required for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of the course. The specialization diploma is awarded after passing a final test which consists in the discussion of the specialization thesis and considers the results of the periodic evaluations deriving from any ongoing tests, as well as the opinions of the teacher-tutors.
Learning centers
At the end of the training course, the Animal Nutrition Specialist will have acquired theoretical, scientific and professional knowledge relating to the nutrition and feeding of animals of zootechnical interest, in order to acquire specific skills regarding:
- Knowledge of the chemical-nutritional and health characteristics of traditional and alternative zootechnical feed.
- The formulation of diets suitable for expressing the genetic potential of animals.
- The maintenance and improvement of the health of animals, as well as the prevention of pathologies through adequate nutritional interventions aimed at reducing the use of antibiotics.
- Development of nutritional strategies for reducing competition in the use of food for human and animal nutrition, the impact on the environment of food production and the polluting power of manure.
- Knowledge of the chemical-nutritional and dietary characteristics of products of animal origin, as well as the food-related measures capable of conferring health and safety requirements on foodstuffs.
In practice, the Specialist will be able to interpret the laboratory analyzes regarding the analytical characteristics of foods to be able to formulate a judgment on their suitability for animal nutrition and to suggest any corrective actions. Furthermore, it will be able to formulate diets that meet the needs of animals in different physiological states. He will also be able to formulate diets suitable for specific pathological conditions, proposing an action of nutritional prophylaxis. Finally, he will be in possession of the skills sufficient to modify the qualitative characteristics of products of animal origin through nutritional interventions.
In this sense, the "Animal Nutrition" Specialist is therefore a key figure in ensuring the food safety of products of animal origin intended for human consumption, as well as in guiding their dietary characteristics
