Common training objectives (or common core)
Students must acquire adequate theoretical knowledge and professional skill in the clinical and instrumental diagnosis and the treatment, also in emergency-urgent situations, of the most common pathologies requiring surgery. Students must acquire core competencies in the physiopathology of the different organs and apparatus, theoretical and practical knowledge required to identify diseases affecting the body's different systems; theoretical and practical knowledge of the main sectors of instrumental and laboratory diagnostics pertaining to said diseases, acquire the ability to assess links with, and the impact of, internal and specialist medicine. They must therefore be able to recognize the symptoms and clinical-functional signs of disease in the various organs and systems, having acquired core competencies in diagnostics, therapy, psychology and ethics for a comprehensive patient workup and for assessing inter-system links. To this end they must: develop the ability to clinically assess patients based on the anamnesis and objective examination; develop critical and analytical diagnostic skills; gain familiarity with the main diagnostic procedures and laboratory-instrumental analyses; recognize and be able to address the main medical emergencies; acquaint themselves with therapeutic resources to programme their best use and understand their indications and contraindications, as well as possible interactions and iatrogenic effects; acquire core competencies relating to clinical research methodologies and drug testing; understand the basic issues in prevention, pubic healthcare and social medicine. The student must acquire sufficient theoretical knowledge and professional skill in recognizing and treating the most common pathologies in emergency-urgent situations. Lastly, the student must have knowledge of the clinical presentation and treatment of the most common pathologies pertaining to the other class types.
Core training objectives
- in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiopathology and pharmacology relevant to the School;
- competency in conducting epidemiological evaluations and systematization of clinical data, also through the use of information systems;
- organization and management of healthcare services in accordance with the latest directives, knowledge of the principles of asepsis and antisepsis and of problems relating to organization and environmental hygiene in the operating room and surgical wards;
- acquisition of competencies and related practical experience for personally assessing the overall condition of patients;
- knowledge of the medical-legal aspects of their profession and of the laws and regulations governing healthcare.
Students must also acquire the core competencies to organize and manage their own maxillofacial surgical activity in relation to the characteristics of the facility in which they operate.
School-specific training objectives
- acquisition of core competencies for carrying out clinical objective examinations and medical surgery;
- knowledge of surgical instruments and of suture materials, and of traditional and alternative surgical methods and techniques;
- basic knowledge and related practical experience for personally assessing the overall condition of patients and pathology, for the correct diagnostic definition of the pathology in individual patients and for identifying the most suitable treatment as a function of risks, benefits and expected outcome for each single patient;
- be able to address and solve issues pertaining to the definition and management of postoperative care and aftercare based on the overall assessment of disease and patient;
- be able to personally perform urgent surgery; be able to link generalist training with school-specific training
School-specific training objectives (Academic field MED/29 Maxillo-Facial Surgery)
The acquisition of theoretical, scientific and professional knowledge for providing assistance in the field of maxillo-facial and dental surgery in paediatric patients and adults; acquisition of competencies in physiopathology, clinical approach and therapy in diseases of the oro-maxillo-facial and cervical region, with specific knowledge of maxillofacial surgical techniques, advanced methods of surgery and microsurgery in the context of maxillo-facial reconstruction; acquisition of specific competencies in maxillofacial traumatology, in oro-maxillofacial oncology surgery, in dental surgery, in orthognathic surgery, in salivary gland surgery, in the surgical treatment of cranial-facial malformations and in reconstructive surgery of the maxillofacial region
Related or additional objectives :
- acquisition of the core, school-specific and related competencies and experience to diagnose and treat pathologies also of interest to other specialists in the class or other classes;
- the ability to recognise, diagnose and prescribe treatment, defining overall priorities in the case of multiple pathologies or lesions in patients requiring the assistance of other specialists among those mentioned above.
Through training, the student must acquire the school-specific scientific skills so as to fully develop their professional competencies, including the ability to critically interpret scientific innovation in order to responsibly manage both assistance and their personal development in the field; in this context they may be required to attend meetings and conferences, write scientific papers or spend time in Italian or foreign qualified institutions for further relevant training.
Mandatory professionalizing activities to achieve the objectives of the typology are:
a) at least 50 major surgery operations, of which 10% as first operator. The rest as second operator;
b) at least 100 medium surgery operations, of which 25% as first operator. The rest as second operator;
c) at least 250 minor surgery operations, of which 40% as first operator (including laparoscopic surgery procedures as well as outpatient and D.H. procedures) The rest as second operator. Demonstrate having provided direct and responsible assistance, with related diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, to an adequate number of elective, critical and emergency/urgent patients.
The Resident must have provided direct assistance for two two-month periods in General Surgery and Emergency Surgery and First Aid. He/she may compete for the diploma after completing the surgical activity.
For the purposes of circulation in EU countries of the specialist in Maxillofacial Surgery, the training course allows to acquire the skills of the Master's Degree Graduates in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics limited to the professionalizing ones and without acquiring the LM title.
The specialist will be able to compete for the diploma after completing the professionalizing activities.

Candidates are selected through an annual competition based on qualifications and examination. The call for applications is normally issued by 28 February of each year by a Ministerial Decree, and the number of places available is determined pursuant to art. 35, paragraph 2, of Legislative Decree no. 368 of 1999.
Eligible candidates are Medicine graduates who obtained their degree before the application deadline set out in the call for applications, provided that they pass the Medical Practitioner State Board Exam within the start date of the Postgraduate School programme.
