Exercise and Sports Sciences @ LaStatale
In addition to the training of professionals and experts in physical and sports activities and training, the School of Exercise and Sports Sciences at the University of Milan supports doctoral programmes dedicated to research in the field of physical activity and sport.
The School of Exercise and Sports Sciences is a "young" school because it was recently established, but it boasts the experience of one of the first Higher Institutes of Physical Education (ISEF) founded in Italy, the ISEF for Lombardy which gave rise to the current university course.
Teaching and research in the area of Exercise and Sports Sciences focuses on exercise and sports activities as an increasingly sophisticated tool for the preparation of sports and physical exercise professionals.
Training pathways provide specific skills not only in the programming and management of purely sporting activities, but also in the development, maintenance and recovery of movement skills and psychophysical wellbeing.
The School of Exercise and Sports Sciences at the University of Milan is unique in the Italian context, providing as it does for a productive combination of theory and practice in its training plans and boasting inter-university collaborations and international research and training agreements with:
- Liverpool John Moores University, UK
- Université Jean Monnet, Saint-Etienne, FR
- Université de Bourgogne, Dijon, FR
- Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, ES
- Bangor University, UK

The School of Exercise and Sports Sciences has its own publication, which enjoys international circulation and is also the official journal of the Italian Society of Exercise and Sport Sciences (SISMES).
The Faculty of Exercise and Sports Sciences at the University of Milan was officially founded in 1999, when public law 109/99 introduced Faculties of Exercise and Sports Sciences in the Italian context and as replacing the Higher Institutes of Physical Education (ISEF).
At the University of Milan, the birth of the School has involved both staff in vocational disciplines of high technical and practical standing and researchers from different scientific areas of the University, mainly from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
A Joint Coordinating Committee (University of Milan and ISEF for Lombardy) provided the teaching and organizational structure of the nascent new Faculty of the University of Milan. This was officially inaugurated on 15 September 1999 and was headed by Giuliano Pizzini, former Director of the ISEF for Lombardy.
This wonderful combination has allowed us to further develop the educational and scientific expertise accumulating since the birth of the ISEF for Lombardy in 1965. The latter was established thanks to the collaboration between the University of Milan, the Municipality and the Province of Milan.
In 2012, with the reorganization of the entire University, the Faculty of Exercise and Sports Sciences became the School of Exercise and Sports Sciences.
