Learning objectives
The course provides students with a deep understanding of the journey of a musical source, covering the stages of fixation, transmission, reconstruction, and presentation. It explores the historical aspects of musical notation and printing techniques, analyzing the evolution of transcription and publishing methods. The second part of the course introduces digital tools for music publishing, focusing on the practical use of digital score editors, the study of text-based approaches, and the adoption of specific libraries for music notation.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will have acquired a solid understanding of the processes related to music publishing, from the historical evolution of notation to modern digital tools. They will be able to critically analyze different sources, recognizing their transformations over time and the editorial choices that define them. Students will develop practical skills in using digital score editors and will become familiar with plain text-based approaches for describing musical notation. These skills will enable them to integrate musical symbols into texts of various kinds.
