Learning objectives
The course provides a basic knowledge of biological, ethological and morphological characteristics of wild ungulates and of the main tools for wildlife management (e.g. census methods, captures and translocations, culling plans, etc.).
Expected learning outcomes
After this course, the students will have a basic knowledge of wildlife management of different wild species in protected areas, as well as in areas subjected to hunting management and in extensive or intensive farming conditions.
In addition the students will be able to plan and achieve wildlife management interventions in mountain areas; to evaluate the impact of animal husbandry activities on wildlife in mountain areas.

· Laws regulating wildlife management (1 h)
· The domestication process (2 h)
· Principles of extensive management (1 h)
· Biology and behaviour of alpine ungulate species (5 h)
· Identification of sex and age classes of wild ungulate species (4 h)
· Census methods (2 h)
· Captures (2 h)
· Translocations (0.5 h)
· Setting culling plans (0.5 h)
· Interactions between wild and domestic fauna (4 h)
· Fauna and primary productions (2 h)

PRACTICAL TRAINING
· Field trips (10 h)
· Projection and discussion of videos (4 h)
· Practical age estimation on trophies and jaws (2 h).
Prerequisites for admission
Passing the exam of Animal Biology (first year).
There is a limited number of available placements. It is compulsory to subscribe by sending an email to the Edolo Didactic Secretariat ([email protected]).
Attendance is compulsory (at least 75% of the lessons).
Lessons will be held at the Università della Montagna (Edolo, BS).
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons, supplemented by exercises for the recognition of sex and age classes from photos and videos, and for age estimation of culled animals through the analysis of trophies and mandibles. The course ends with a didactic field trip, aimed at putting into practice the recognition of the various species, sex and age classes of wild ungulates and the implementation of census methods and of identification of signs pf presence.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an oral interview aimed at ascertaining the acquisition, the correct understanding and the ability to re-elaborate the course contents and is achieved through the formulation of questions aimed at verifying the knowledge of the subject, the expository capacity, the capacity for critical analysis of the contents. The outcome will be expressed in thirtieths and the final grade will take into account the accuracy and quality of the answers, as well as the communication skills and the ability to adequately motivate statements, analyses and judgments during the interview.
