Teaching Latin Language and Literature

Learning objectives
The course enables students to acquire the necessary preparation and credits to enter the profession of Latin teachers in upper secondary schools, in accordance with the concept of "Latin culture" in the legislation currently in force. Students will be particularly enabled to acquire and experiment with the new teaching methods based on the certification of competences.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: students will know the aims of teaching Latin in the 21st century, with reference to its historical and cultural dimension, to the development of semiotic and expressive skills, to the enhancement of linguistic competence (including neo-Latin languages). They will also know the teaching techniques, in view of a school practice that considers an active, participatory practice, made of laboratory teaching, with media, able to include alternative teaching methods.
Skills: at the end, students will be able to deepen the problems and methods of teaching Latin, having acquired the necessary skills to design effective courses in the classroom, according to a right interdisciplinary approach and to the modern teaching techniques. They will also be able to evaluate critically teaching materials used in schools; they will gain the necessary competence in the art of testing and evaluating their pupils.

Unit A (Gioseffi): The unit will focus on how to present Latin texts to a high school class, taking particular account of language difficulties.
Unit B (tba): This unit will focus on the slang of everyday life in a classroom.

Prerequisites for admission
A good knowledge of Latin is required (at least 6 ECTS). It is needed to pass a preliminary written test, MA level.

Lectures; online interactive exercises; classroom exercises. Attendance is strongly recommended.

Assessment methods and Criteria
A preliminary computer-based language test is aimed to assess the ability to understand complex Latin texts (B2 certification level). The test is mandatory and must be passed to access the oral examination; the same test is valid for all Latin exams (MA level). The test does not give a grade, but only the admission to the oral examination. A few tests assigned in recent years are available online. In particular, will be evalueted: correctness in interpreting the text; ability to understand the pivot points through answers to both open and closed questions.
The oral part of the examination will test
- the ability to critically discuss the bibliography presented in class, constructing a teaching unit chosen by the student;
- the ability to present to a high school class an epode by Horace, chosen by the commission at the time of the exam;
- the ability to understand and present to a high school class a short text chosen by the commission at the time of the exam, taken from the production of authors in use at school.
Among the evaluation criteria, ample emphasis will be placed on the ability to present Latin texts to an ideal high school class; the ability to motivate the study of Latin; the correctness in analysing and discussing the content of the topics discussed in class; the appropriateness of the critical vocabulary; the ability to raise and solve didactic problems, even complex ones, from the perspective of teaching a high school class.
It is possible to speak in Italian, English or Latin; the passing mark is 18/30, the top mark is 30/30 (cum laude).
Non-attending students should refer to the material (bibliography, threads, recordings etc.) made available online.
International or Erasmus incoming students are invited to contact the teachers.
Procedures for students with disabilities and/or SLDs must be agreed with the teachers, in accordance with the Faculty.
