Learning objectives
The major aim of the course will be to deepen the knowledge of chemotherapy and neuropsychopharmacology as well as the pharmacological aspects of the drugs most commonly used in either fields. The main classes of chemotherapic drugs (antibiotics, anticancer drugs) and drugs used for the treatment of psychiatric diseases (antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, drugs for the treatment of bipolar disorder) will be investigated. Of both classes, some original scientific articles will be discussed with interactive critical discussion.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate to have learned the rationale for the therapeutic use of both macro-classes of drugs, deepening their mechanism of action and side effects, appropriately assessing their risk/benefit. Particular attention will be paid to the interactions and the possible manifestation of resistance to their use.

Neuropsychopharmacology
Course syllabus
How to organize an experimental research in the field of neuropsychopharmacology: criteria and
principles. Acquisition of data from the scientific literature; structure and analysis of scientific works;
consultation of databases. Preparation of a scientific manuscript in the neuropsychopharmacological
field.
Validity of the use of in vitro methods for the study of neuropsychopharmacology: use of cell cultures
Validity of the use of in vivo methods for the study of neuropsychopharmacology: use of laboratory
animals (rodents). Use of laboratory animals: legislation and criteria. In vivo test for the determination of
pharmacological activity, related to selected classes of drugs. Biological variability; statistical elaboration
and analysis of the experimental results.
Study methods for psychiatric diseases: genetic models and environmental models. Biomarkers in
psychiatric research and their clinical implications. General considerations and applications.
Study methods of drugs with antidepressant activity
Study methods of drugs with antipsychotic activity
Methods of study of drugs with analgesic activity
Study methods of drugs with anxiolytic and hypnotic activity
Study of substance and non-substance addiction. Animal models for the study of drugs of abuse and
