Learning objectives
The course aims to contribute to the formation of the Conservation Scientist by providing the theoretical, methodological and technical tools related to the discipline of Conservation and Restoration.
The first core of lessons will be dedicated to the discussion of materials and the main techniques of the artifacts of historical and artistic interest, a fundamental premise for the understanding of the interaction artifact-environment, for the evaluation of the state of conservation, the interpretation of the diagnostic data and the design of an intervention of maintenance and restoration.
Starting from the relativism of the concept of restoration, the second core of lessons will illustrate the history and the evolution in its methodological aspects, starting from the ancient world up to the current orientations, considering the international research panorama.
The course will focus on the theories of restoration and in particular on the fundamental theoretical, critical and methodological contribution of Cesare Brandi.
Finally, some case studies will be presented and discussed, which are the object of the most relevant and current diagnostic, conservation and restoration projects carried out by national and international museums and research institutions.
Expected learning outcomes
The course will provide the possibility to obtain the knowledge on historical and cultural events of restoration. The course will also provide the opportunity to approach of artworks with a different vision.
