Research Sources and Methods: Applications in the Field of Public History

Learning objectives
The seminar presents various - mainly historical - research methodologies, while always taking due account of the interplay that exists between different domains and the language they employ.
Participants will be taught to understand how different type of sources can be best leveraged, from "traditional sources" (archives and printed sources) to oral sources and media (film, radio and television), including digital (online) sources.

Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of the seminar, participants will be able to understand which types of sources are most suitable to assess the history and culture of a given subject and to use those sources accordingly, while also challenging any abusive practices or mystification intended to skew public opinion.

Different methodologies and research tools in the field of Public History
Prerequisites for admission
The students must have a three-year degree in humanities or have at least attended a course in Contemporary history (M-STO 04)
Teaching methods
During the lessons, held by the professor and by other experts, the tools for understanding and using the various research methodologies will be provided, keeping interdisciplinarity in mind.
The students will understand how to use different types of sources, from "traditional" ones (archives and printed ones), to oral ones, to the media (cinema, radio, television), including digital ones (internet) for the Public History.
In conjunction with the interventions of external experts, the time of the meetings may undergo variations.
