Learning objectives
General objectives
The course Reproduction in the Dog and the Cat is aimed to provide the students basic information about main aspects of canine and feline reproduction, for the knowledge and management of estrous cycles; for the knowledge and management of collection, evaluation and storage of semen; for the knowledge and management of mating and artificial inseminations; for the knowledge and management of pregnancies, parturitions and post-partum.
Knowledge and understanding:
Students will learn basic knowledge and ways for the management of estrous cycle, for the collection, evaluation and storage of semen, for the management of mating and artificial inseminations, for the management of pregnancies, parturitions and post-partum in the canine and feline species.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
Students will apply knowledge and ways for the management of estrous cycle, for the collection, evaluation and storage of semen, for the management of mating and artificial inseminations, for the management of pregnancies, parturitions and post-partum in the canine and feline species.
Autonomy of judgment:
Students will learn how to autonomously manage the estrous cycle, the collection, evaluation and storage of semen, the management of mating and artificial inseminations, the management of pregnancies, parturitions and post-partum in the canine and feline species.
Communication skills:
Students will learn how to communicate, as acquired through lessons and practices, to owners and breeders, orally or in written way, using appropriate scientific, technical language, the ways for the management of estrous cycle, for the collection, evaluation and storage of semen, for the management of mating and artificial inseminations, for the management of pregnancies, parturitions and post-partum in the canine and feline species.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will learn basic knowledge and ways for the correct management of estrous cycle, for the collection, evaluation and storage of semen, for the management of mating and artificial inseminations, for the management of pregnancies, parturitions and post-partum in the canine and feline species. Moreover, the students will be able to communicate what above reported to owners and breeders, orally or in written way, using appropriate scientific, technical language.

The course imply 40 h of lectures and 16 hours of practices.
LECTURES (40 H)
Puberty and management of the estrous cycle in bitches and queens: times, modalities and factors influencing puberty; estrous cycle: peculiarities, monitoring methods, practical significance (8 hours)
Collection of semen in dogs and cats (4 hours)
Examination and storage of semen in dogs and cats (4 hours)
Management of natural matings and artificial inseminations in dogs and cats (6 hours)
Management of pregnancy in bitches and queens (4 hours)
Parturition management in bitches and queens (8 hours)
Post partum management in bitches and queens (6 hours)

PRACTICES (16 H)
Self-assessment test of basic knowledge of the functional anatomy of the male and female reproductive system in dogs and cats (2 hours)
Practical management of estrus and mating monitoring: case study presentation and discussion (4 hours)
Practical exercise on semen collection and analysis in dogs (4 hours): videos on semen collection and analysis in dogs
Simulation of artificial insemination in bitches and queens (2 hours): skill lab
Simulation of newborn puppies and kittens assessment and assistance (4 hours): skill lab
Prerequisites for admission
The knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the female and male reproductive system are considered necessary for the understanding of the subject
Teaching methods
The frontal lessons take place in the classroom with the aid of slides. Students are invited to participate actively in the lesson, on the basis of the knowledge acquired in the preparatory subjects.
A first part of the exercises will take place in the classroom with the presentation and discussion of practical cases for monitoring and managing estrus and mating and with the projection of films relating to the practical aspects of semen collection and conservation. The second part of the exercises will take place in the skill lab where the students, under the guidance of the trainers, will carry out simulation manuals of artificial insemination in bitches and cats and will simulate the main methods of assessment and assistance to newborns in dogs and cats. Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam takes place in written test, with the following questions:
· A multiple choice question (5 answers) with the possibility of choosing only one correct answer.
The question aims to verify the acquisition of the basic knowledge. In case of no answer or wrong answer, the question is evaluated with a score equal to zero. If the answer is correct, the question is evaluated with a score of 5.
· An open-ended question with a short answer for the description of the main concepts relating to the main methodologies relating to the topics covered. The question aims to verify the acquisition of skills for the management of reproduction in dogs and cats. The answer will be evaluated with a maximum score of 10.
· An open question with theoretical-applicative focus to verify the student's acquisition not only of basic information, but also of being able to develop a logical reasoning for the correct management of the various aspects covered in dog and cat reproduction. The answer will be evaluated with a maximum score equal to 15.
The final mark of the written test will be expressed out of thirty.
If the student answers positively and exhaustively to all the questions of the written test, his final grade will be equal to 30/30 or 30/30L.
There are 8 exam sessions and they take place in the months of January, February, April, June, July, September, October and December with the cadence set by the teaching college. There are also additional exam sessions for out-of-course students.
In order to take the exam, it is essential to register for the session through the ONLINE SIFA service of the University.
