Learning objectives
The course is composed by lectures (Inorganic qualitative analysis according to Pharmacopoeia) and individual laboratory training (Laboratory of inorganic qualitative analysis).
The main topics of the lectures are the in-depth analysis of the preparatory courses knowledge (General and Inorganic Chemistry, and Stoichiometry and Analytical Chemistry) applied on the qualitative analysis and the learning of laboratory safety rules, basic techniques of the practical experimental chemistry and the analytical procedures. These skills will be applied during the laboratory experiences, which will be focused on the study of the physical states, of the reactivity and the identification of the inorganic compounds of medicinal and toxicological relevance prescribed by Italian and European Pharmacopoeias.
Expected learning outcomes
By the lectures, the students will improve their knowledge concerning the theoretical and practical aspects related to the general and inorganic chemistry, qualitative analysis, which they will apply during the individual experimental practices.
By the laboratory experiences (mandatory), the students will acquire expertize to perform studies on the physical states, on the reactivity and to identify inorganic compounds.
Single course

This course can be attended as a single course.

First semester
Course syllabus
Program of the lectures:
- Introduction to the inorganic qualitative analysis.
- Safety guidelines in chemistry laboratory and hazard prevention.
- Basic laboratory procedures.
- Theoretical aspects of the dissolution and precipitation processes.
- Salt hydrolysis: acid/base properties of anions, cations and salts.
- Analysis of anions.
- Analysis of cations (analysis by precipitation of six analytical groups).
- Identification methods for unknown inorganic compounds listed in the European Pharmacopoeia.
- Limit tests: principles reported in F.U.
- Introduction to the laboratory simulator (LabSim).
- Introduction to the pharmaceutical, toxicological and biochemical properties of the inorganic compounds analyzed during the laboratory work.

Program of the practical laboratory experiences:
- Use of laboratory glassware and tools.
- Solubility of salts, hydrolysis of salts, pH measurement, preparation of solutions.
- Reactivity of inorganic substances.
- Study of the physical state of matter.
- Anion and cation recognition assays for the identification of unknown inorganic substances listed in the European Pharmacopoeia.
Prerequisites for admission
The course takes place in the first semester of the second year. The students are expected to have a basic Inorganic Chemistry knowledge.
Teaching methods
The course includes both lectures (unit of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis According to Pharmacopoeia) and practical laboratory experiences (unit of Laboratory of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis).
The unit of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis According to Pharmacopoeia (4 CFU) consists in lectures preparing the students to experimental laboratory training. Since lectures and laboratory experiences take place at the same time, the lesson attendance is strongly recommended.
The unit of Laboratory of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis (2 CFU) consists in eight individual obligatory laboratory sessions. To support this teaching activity, the students can access to the LabSim simulator (https://www.ddl.unimi.it/labsim/index_en.htm), which is a tool for innovative teaching specially developed to offer a complete immersive experience based on the virtual reality technology. Through this simulator, they can deepen their understanding of the practical aspects and practice before the sessions in the laboratory.
Teaching Resources
Recommended books:
- A. Araneo, Chimica Analitica Qualitativa, Casa Editrice Ambrosiana, Milano.
- G. Charlot, Analisi Chimica Qualitativa, Piccin Editore, Padova.
- G. Svela, Vogel's Qualitative Inorganic Analysis, Edizioni Logman, Harlow.

Reference books:
- F. Savelli, O. Bruno, Analisi Chimico Farmaceutica, Piccin Editore, Padova.
- Farmacopea Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana.
- Farmacopea Europea.

Supporting material:
Available in digital format by download from myAriel site.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam consists of a written test of 13 questions that must be completed in 90 minutes. The overall evaluation is scored in thirtieths and, in particular, each question can be evaluated with a maximum of 2/30 for a total amount of 26/30. The remaining 4/30 derive from the evaluation of the laboratory activity (Laboratory of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis unit), which consists in the analysis of 4 unknown inorganic substances reported in the European Pharmacopeia. Each substance correctly identified is assigned a score of 1/30 for a total of 4/30 of the laboratory evaluation. The so acquired score is communicated anonymously via the myAriel platform before the first session useful for taking the written test. The final score of the exam is communicated by e-mail via the SIFA/UniMia platform within one week from the date of taking the written test, unless otherwise communicated. Examples of the written exam are available on the myAriel platform of the Course.
