Learning objectives
The objective of the course is to study issues related to data privacy and data protection. To this purpose, the course will investigate the problem of ensuring privacy of sensitive or confidential information in data publication and release and the problem of ensuring data security and privacy in emerging scenarios, where data are often stored, managed, and processed by external - not fully trusted - parties.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have acquired the main concepts related to privacy and data protection in different scenarios. The student will have knowledge of different issues, solutions, existing technologies as well as open problems. It is expected that the student will have developed critical thinking and sensibility on the problem of data protection so to be able to analyze the different privacy issues in different scenarios where the student may operate in the future and evaluate possible solutions to them.

Today's information society relies more and more on the publication, sharing, and release of data as well as on the use of third parties for the service and data management. In such contexts it is crucial to provide users with the ability of ensuring security and privacy of their data and maintain control over such data, even when they are stored, managed, or processed by other parties. This course considers emerging scenarios involving data publication, sharing, management, and processing and discuss issues and possible solutions for guaranteed data security and privacy in such contexts. Main topics that will be addressed are:

- Macrodata and microdata protection
- Introduction to security and privacy in the cloud
- Models and languages for user privacy preferences
- Data protection in outsourcing and cloud scenarios
- Access confidentiality and query integrity

Assessment methods and Criteria
Written exam aimed at verifying the student's knowledge and understanding of the subject. The written test includes theory questions and exercises. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. The mark is expressed in thirtieths and the grading will consider the correctness, completeness, and clarity of the answers to the questions and exercises. The exam is closed book.
