Learning objectives
The main objective is to acquire knowledge about the composition, the therapeutic efficacy and the side effects of medicinal plants.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have to know the mechanisms responsible for the interaction between the drugs and their main constituents with the biological systems, the therapeutic applications and the precautions for use in specific situations.

Course syllabus
The program of the course provides for the presentation and discussion of the following topics:
- Notions of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
- Interaction of medicinal plants with drugs or food;
- Analysis of medicinal plants for the gastroenteric system, for the respiratory system, for Alzheimer Disease, for the cardiovascular system, for diuresis, for the eye pathologies, for the prevention and the treatment of cancer, for the therapy of diabetes, plant used as galactogens;
- lectures focusing on antinflammatory natural products, hive products, Cannabis sativa, Calendula officinalis, Arnica montana.
- Notions of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
- Interaction of medicinal plants with drugs or food;
- Analysis of medicinal plants for the gastroenteric system, for the respiratory system, for Alzheimer Disease, for the cardiovascular system, for diuresis, for the eye pathologies, for the prevention and the treatment of cancer, for the therapy of diabetes, plant used as galactogens;
- lectures focusing on antinflammatory natural products, hive products, Cannabis sativa, Calendula officinalis, Arnica montana.
Prerequisites for admission
As reported in the Programme description, the courses of "Plant biology and pharmaceutical botany", "Pharmacology and toxicology" and "Pharmacognosy 1" are preparatory and compulsory.
Teaching methods
The course is designed for delivery in synchronous face-to-face lessons.
Ongoing optional tests are planned with feedback from the teacher for a coherent preparation with the final exam modality.
There will be two lectures in which group work, which must consist of a maximum of 3 participants, will be carried out to prepare the paper to be handed in for the examination.
A lesson is scheduled at the Brera botanical garden in the period from the end of May to the beginning of June, the date will be communicated in the second half of May based on availability and weather conditions.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will tackle all the parts of the program and the student should demonstrate to have acquired the basic concepts of any subject. The exam is written, and the total examination time is 2 hours. The exam is constituted of 5 multiple choices questions (1 point each) and 3 open questions (7 points each). Furthermore, 5 points will be assigned on the basis of a group paper relating to a topic assigned during the semester, to be delivered by MyAriel to the teacher within 15 days before the chosen exam date. Two lectures are dedicated to literature research, group paper preparation and mock examination.
The teacher will evaluate the basic knowledge and the ability of the student to logically organize the knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for the interaction between the drugs and their main constituents with the biological systems, the therapeutic applications and the precautions for use in specific situations.
The final mark is in thirtieths and will be communicated when the final vote is registered with the possibility of rejecting the outcome of the exam. The teacher is available to review the exam with the students.

There are 30 hours of video lessons to be used independently, 3 face-to-face classroom appointments with live streaming (place and date to be notified) in which to discuss, answer questions and carry out in-depth studies; ongoing tests are foreseen with feedback from the teacher for a coherent preparation with the final exam modality. The ongoing tests are optional, they are found one after module 1 and one after module 4, they can be carried out in a group which must be composed of a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 participants.
