Medical and Surgical Emergency

- Etiology, diagnosis and treatment of acute (pneumonia, ARDS) and chronic respiratory failure
- Etiology, diagnosis and treatment of exacerbation of bronchial asthma and COPD
- Diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism
- Diagnosis and treatment of pneumothorax
- Treatment and differential diagnosis of potentially evolutionary clinical situations: disorders of consciousness, haemodynamic instability, dyspnea
- Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of shock
- Identification and treatment of the main metabolic and endocrinological emergencies and of acid-base disorders
- Diagnosis and treatment of the main neurological emergencies and differential diagnosis of altered mental status
- Diagnosis and treatment of the principal intoxications
- Acute and chronic pain management
- Cardiac arrest, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, management of post-cardiac-arrest-syndrome.
Anesthesiology clinical skills (1 CFU): the students will attend the clinical activity in the Emergency department (medical and surgical sections) and will attend the activity of the Medical Emergency Team caring for in-hospital emergencies. The objective is to learn the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the critically ill patients.
Pain Therapy clinical skills (1 CFU): seminars and attendance of Acute Pain Service and Chronic Pain Service, aimed at learning the diagnostic-therapeutic approach to the patients with acute and chronic pain.
The teaching material (lecture slide, relevant articles from the literature) is available on the course Ariel platform.

- Approach and management of the patient presenting with dyspnea;
- Approach and management of the patient presenting with chest pain;
- Approach and management of the patient presenting with hyper and hypotension;
- Approach and management of the patient presenting with endocrinological emergencies.
During the attendance of the medical section of the Emergency Department, the students will learn the diagnostic approach to the patients with medical acute illnesses.

- Development and organization of trauma system for major trauma
- Principles of cardio-respiratory stabilization of trauma patient
- Clinical and instrumental diagnosis in major trauma
- General therapeutic strategies in major trauma
- Evaluation of abdominal pain and general approach to peritonitis
- Vascular emergencies
During the attendance of the surgical section of the Emergency Department, the students will learn the diagnostic approach to the patients with surgical acute illnesses.
