Learning objectives
The course proposes the study of some applied research problems. The goal is to
develop, implement and apply proper mathematical models requiring the
development of suitable tools, possibly based on simulations and data analysis.
The topics may vary across the years, according to the teachers holding the course
and the research themes they propose.
Expected learning outcomes
To develop a mathematical model describing physical, biological, social, financial
phenomena. To design a numerical algorithm and to implement a computational
code in order to simulate phenomena described by a mathematical model. To work
in a team. To write a scientific report. To structure a scientific presentation.
Single course

This course can be attended as a single course.

Lesson period
Second semester
Course syllabus
The program depends on the project assigned by the teacher.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic lectures of Bachelor program in Mathematics.
Teaching methods
Lectures and lab sessions.
Teaching Resources
Bibliographic references will be given during the course according to the projects to which the students will be assigned.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a laboratory test and an oral test.
- The laboratory test consists of the development of a project, previously assigned by the teacher, and which will be presented by the student at the same time as the oral test. The project consists in the realization of a code for the numerical simulation of a mathematical model. The laboratory test aims to evaluate the student's ability to frame a mathematical modeling problem, to identify a solution and to report on the results obtained.

- During the oral exam you will be asked to illustrate the assigned project.

The exam is passed if the laboratory and oral tests are passed. No mark is assigned.
