Learning objectives
The course aims to combine the tools of legal conceptual analysis with the topics and purposes of gender studies, an interdisciplinary approach that investigates the constructions and effects of sexual and gender identities. In particular, through the study and discussion of Italian law, jurisprudence, and case law, the course seeks to achieve the capacity to integrate knowledge and to analyse, evaluate and manage the problems related to gender equality.
The course will deal with topics such as the concept of gender (and its distinction from the concept of sex), the juridical constructions of gender identities and their social equivalents, the gender legal discrimination and the legal instruments to make up will be discussed.
Expected learning outcomes
- Knowledge and understanding of the legal problems related to the distinction between genders and to the principle of non-discrimination
- Ability to apply the concepts and tools of gender studies to new legal problems
- Critical judgment acquired through discussions and debates in the classroom
- Development of a communication skill and excellent mastery of the concepts related to gender equality
- Independent learning by managing the critical tools provided by gender studies

The course will deal following topics: gender and gender; gender and equality; gender in criminal law; gender-based violence; gender and sexual preferences; gender and parenting; gender and poverty.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific prerequisites.
Teaching methods
This course has the structure of a seminar with huge space for discussion and group work.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Attending students: either an oral examination or an on-going assessment with exercises assigned during the lectures.
Not attending studends: Oral examination.
Evaluation criteria: exposition quality; ability to organize knowledge; ability to manage the concepts and methods of gender studies, applying them to new legal problems.
