Learning objectives
This year the course will be focused on the analysis of the socioeconomic structures of contemporary Japan, discussed in a historical perspective and within the regional and global context. The goal is to provide the student with the knowledge and the instruments for a critical appraisal of the main tendencies and of the scholarly interpretations of Japanese post-war economic development.
Expected learning outcomes
As a result, by the end of this course the students will have acquired a wide knowledge of the socioeconomic structures of contemporary Japan, their evolution in the post-war period and their distinctive characteristics analysed in a comparative perspective. This knowledge will enable the student to understand the current reality and the main trends that are shaping and changing the Japanese economy and society.

The course provides an overview of the key events that have shaped the relationship between Italy and Japan from the 16th century onwards.
Prerequisites for admission
This course requires students to have a solid understanding of Japanese history starting from the 15th century. It is advisable to read either 'Storia del Giappone' by Rosa Caroli and Francesco Gatti, Laterza 2017 (revised and updated edition), or 'Il Giappone moderno dall'Ottocento al 1945' by Andrea Revelant, Einaudi 2018.

Lessons in presence. A selection of classes on specialized topics will be held by experts invited by the instructor.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Upon completing the course, students are required to pass a written examination designed to assess the critical thinking skills and independent judgment they have developed through the debates facilitated by the instructor during the lessons.
